Women's Basketball Drops Conference Opener at Radford

RADFORD, Va. - UNC Asheville women's basketball dropped its Big South Conference opener at Radford on Thursday (Dec. 29) by a score of 69-42.
The teams played a low-scoring first quarter, which saw Radford jump out to a 7-2 lead at the media break. The Bulldogs got back within one possession with a three-pointer from Jamaya Blanks, before a triple from Abigail Wilson got them within one point at 9-8. Radford ended the first quarter with a 10-8 lead.
The Bulldogs got within one again two and a half minutes into the second quarter after back-to-back buckets from Wilson and Jamia Blake, before a Dakota McCaughan triple gave the Bulldogs their first lead four minutes into the period at 15-13. Radford rattled off six straight points to take a 19-15 lead with three and a half minutes to play in the period, before Jordaynia Ivie knocked down a three-pointer to get the Bulldogs back within one with three minutes to play. The teams would trade buckets in the final minutes of the second quarter, with a three-pointer from Wilson serving as the final bucket of the half as Radford took a 24-23 lead to the break.
Radford started off the third quarter on a 6-2 run, before hitting their offensive stride and controlling the third quarter.
The Bulldogs battled until the final horn in the fourth.
Wilson led the Bulldogs with 11 points in the game, while McCaughan had nine and McKinley Brooks-Sumpter had six. Jamia Blake and Blanks each had five points in the game, while Ivie and Mallory Bruce each had three in the game. Wilson also led the Bulldogs with six boards in the game, along with five rebounds each from Blanks and Bruce. Ivie pulled down four rebounds in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter, Blake and Jada Brigman each pulled down three in the game. Faith Adams had two boards in the game, while Nycerra Minnis and McCaughan each had one. Ivie dished out a team-high four assists in the game, while Blake and Adams each had two and Blanks, Bruce and McCaughan each had one. McCaughan led the way with three steals in the game, while Blake had two and Ivie, Minnis and Wilson each had one. Ivie, Blanks and Brooks-Sumpter each had blocks in the game for Asheville.
