BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Campbell Saturday afternoon by scores of 12-2 and 9-1.
Game One Recap – After scoring 19 runs in Friday's series opener, Campbell picked up where it left off in the first game Saturday. The Camels scratched across the game's first run to take the early advantage before MJ Lucas quickly tied the score at one with an RBI double in the top half of the second. However, Campbell blew the game open with a seven-run second inning to pull back in front. The Camels added some more insurance runs later in the contest before finishing the 12-2 victory in seven innings.
Asheville was limited to five hits in the seven-inning tilt. Cam Johnson, who did not start the game, went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the way. Wade Chandler scored both of Asheville's runs and went 1-for-2 with a walk as well.
Asheville used five pitchers in game one of Saturday's twin bill. Freshman Brett Johnson had the best outing of the bunch as he tossed a scoreless inning in the sixth with one hit and one walk allowed.
Game Two Recap – Asheville starting pitcher Kole Harris did a good job early, keeping the hot-hitting Campbell offense off balance. However, the Camels put together a sizable threat in the fourth as four of the first five hitters reached to begin the inning. After the frame, Campbell grew its lead from 2-0 to 6-0.
In addition to the Camels' offensive numbers, they also benefited from their best start of the weekend by Thomas Harrington. Harrington struck out 11 Bulldogs in seven innings of work, allowing three hits and one run in the outing.
Much like Friday's opener, Asheville's lone run in game two came via a solo home run from Brandon Lankford. With this long ball, Lankford is now in sole possession of third place on Big South's all-time home run list with 47.
Lankford posted the lone two-hit outing for the Bulldogs in game two with a single to go with his home run. Eight of the nine players in Asheville's starting lineup reached base at least once, with five reaching with base hits.
Like in game one of the day, the Bulldogs had five pitchers log time on the mound in game two. Ethan Tressler (1.2 innings) and Blake Little (1 inning) put together stellar appearances out of the Asheville bullpen. In 2.2 innings, the duo of Tressler and Little allowed just one hit between them with no walks and no runs.
Next Up – Asheville will return to action on Tuesday when it visits Presbyterian in another Big South clash. This contest, which was not on the original schedule, is the final make-up game between the Bulldogs and Blue Hose from a postponed series in early March. The first pitch on Tuesday is set for 3:30 p.m.
