Baseball falls to Presbyterian in series opener

04.02.2021 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team opened up its three-game series with Presbyterian on Friday, falling to the Blue Hose 6-1 at a windy Greenwood Field.

Charlie McDaniel picked up the win for Presbyterian, allowing one run in seven innings pitched despite Asheville registering seven hits and striking out just twice. Ryan Douglas takes the loss for the Bulldogs, throwing three innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts. Eric Toth powered the Blue Hose offense, going 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Brandon Lankford went 2-for-4 with the lone run scored for the Bulldogs.

Asheville now drops to 6-14 (5-10 Big South), with Presbyterian improving to 6-8 and 5-3 in conference play.

How it Happened
After putting down Presbyterian in order in the first, the Blue Hose would get to Douglas, registering a single and a walk, working the runners over to score on a wild pitch and a single by Kyle Decker. Landon Shaw led off the third with a walk and was ultimately brought in to make the score 3-0. In the fourth, singled in Brody Fahr singles in Jake Wyandt.

Lankford led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, took second on a wild pitch and reached third via a Sebastian Dunn single. Lankford would be brought in when Easton Jones stepped up to the plate, but Presbyterian turned a double play in the process and was able to get out of the jam with no further damage. The Blue Hose answered right back in the top of the seventh, adding two to extend their lead to five. Blake Little would put Presbyterian down with just one hit in the ninth. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bulldogs worked the bases loaded, but could not cash in as the Blue Hose took the game 6-1.
