Baseball Closes Homestand With Three vs. Presbyterian

04.01.2021 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will close out its season-long 10-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series vs. Presbyterian at Greenwood Field. Asheville and Presbyterian will play once Friday (2 p.m.) before playing a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.). Friday's contest will air on ESPN+.

Probable Pitching Matchups
Game 1: Charlie McDaniel (PC) vs. Ryan Douglas (AVL)
Game 2: Eric Miles (PC) vs. Jacob Edwards (AVL)
Game 3: Duncan Howard (PC) vs. Kole Harris (AVL)

Last Time Out – Asheville defeated Radford, 5-2, last Saturday. With the victory, it clinched the team's second straight Big South series win. It marks the first time the Bulldogs have won back-to-back conference series since 2016.

Milestone by the Manager – Head Coach Scott Friedholm recently picked up his 100th victory leading the Bulldog program. Friedholm, who is in his seventh season with Asheville, is the first coach in program history to reach this milestone.

Stellar Starts by a Senior – After being a reliever/position player for the bulk of his collegiate career, senior Kole Harris has been given the opportunity recently to make a few starts on the mound for the Bulldogs. Harris has made the most of this chance as he has totaled 12 innings in his three starts, allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, and struck out 10. Additionally, the Bulldogs are 2-1 in these games, with Harris being the winning pitcher in both victories.

Fine Play from Freeberger – The Bulldogs have won three of their last five games, and Dominic Freeberger has been a key reason why. The Baltimore native is hitting .471 with three doubles, three runs scored, and two RBI during that stretch. In addition to his work in the batter's box, Freeberger has seen time at four different positions that included a pair of hitless pitching appearances.

Lankford Launched Another – Brandon Lankford hit a walk-off solo home run Friday evening to help the Bulldogs defeat Radford, 6-5. Lankford is currently tied for the league lead with four home runs in Big South play. Furthermore, with Friday's home run Lankford needs just four more long balls to become the Bulldogs' home run leader surpassing the current record of 42 set by Brian Shehan.

About Presbyterian – The Blue Hose will come to Asheville sporting a 5-8 record overall and 4-3 mark in Big South play. PC is coming off a three-game sweep of Charleston Southern last weekend. For their efforts, Eric Miles (Starting Pitcher) and Charlie McDaniel (Co-Freshman) earned weekly honors from the conference.

Series Rewind vs. PC – Presbyterian has won 24 of the 37 all-time meetings against the Bulldogs since the first matchup in 2008. The Bulldogs will look to snap a three-game losing skid to the Blue Hose, with their last victory over PC occurring on March 20, 2018, 10-3.

Attendance Policy – Face coverings are required, and social distancing protocols will be in place that will limit seating capacity to Asheville fans that are on the pass list. Attendees will be allowed to bring tailgate chairs and game operations staff will direct fans to sit in a socially distant manner. No visiting fans will be admitted.
