Bulldogs Down Radford to Clinch Second Straight Series Win

03.27.2021 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team defeated Radford by a score of 5-2 in the final game of a Big South series Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field. Saturday's victory clinches the second consecutive series win for Asheville after taking two of three games against Campbell last weekend.

Asheville had plenty of contributors to Saturday's victory. Dominic Freeberger reached base four times on a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a double and two RBI. Additionally, Freeberger also tossed two hitless innings out of the Bulldog bullpen. Cam Johnson connected for his first collegiate home run, while Will Barbour picked up his first multi-hit performance of the season with a 2-for-3 effort.

On the pitching side, Kole Harris turned in his second consecutive stellar start. Harris, who saw his record improve to 2-0 with Saturday's victory, pitched a career-high six innings, allowing one run (not earned), scattering three hits and one walk to go along with six strikeouts. Asheville's bullpen also did a stellar job allowing just three Radford baserunners in the final three innings.

Radford struck first Saturday, scoring an unearned run off Harris in the first inning. Asheville answered in the third. Ty Kaufman tied the game with an RBI single to plate Barbour, who reached a double earlier in the frame. Freeberger followed with a double to score both Kaufman and Grayson Preslar to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs added some insurance runs later on with an RBI single from Brandon Lankford in the fifth before Johnson connected on a solo home run in the sixth to give the bullpen a four-run lead to protect.

Isaac Gonzales and Trey Jernigan combined to post a scoreless seventh before Freeberger came in from centerfield to pitch the final two innings. In just his second pitching appearance of the season, Freeberger had Radford's offense off-balance allowing just one unearned run in his outing to lock down the series win for the Bulldogs.

Asheville will return to action with another three-game Big South series on April 1-2 against Presbyterian. The Bulldogs and Blue Hose will play once Thursday (5 p.m.) before playing twice on Friday (1 p.m.). All three games will air on ESPN+.
