Baseball Earns a Split against Campbell Saturday
03.20.2021 | Baseball
Game One Recap – The first game of the day saw the Bulldogs strike first as Grayson Preslar connected on a two-run home run. For Preslar, it marked his first collegiate home run. Campbell would answer Preslar's two-run shot with one of its own in the fourth and tacked a two-run double to pull in front, 4-2.
Asheville and Campbell traded single runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively, but the difference in the game occurred in the eighth inning. Sebastian Dunn and Cam Johnson got things started with one out as Dunn was hit by a pitch and Johnson drew a walk. PJ Heintz drove in Dunn with a single to get the Bulldogs within one. Head Coach Scott Friedholm then turned to his bench and called on Michael Groves and Chris Troost to pinch-hit, and both players came through with run-producing hits to put Asheville in front. Ty Kaufman gave the Bulldogs some insurance, driving in two more runs with a single to grow the lead to three, 8-5.
Brett Johnson started game one and worked the first 2.1 innings and struck out three. In relief of Johnson was Justin Honeycutt. Honeycutt continued his stellar freshman season, logging 5.2 innings, allowing one run and two hits, and struck out a career-high 10 batters. It marks the first double-digit strikeout game for an Asheville pitcher since Blake Brown struck out 10 against Belmont on February 29, 2020.
Thanks to Honeycutt's fantastic outing that allowed Asheville's offense to get to Campbell's bullpen, Asheville turned a three-run lead over to Ethan Tressler in the ninth. Campbell did score once, but Tressler shut the door after that picking up his first collegiate save to preserve the win.
Game Two Recap – Both starting pitchers began game two rather shakily as Campbell and Asheville each scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Campbell's starter Thomas Harrington settled down after a rocky start as he did not allow another Bulldog hit until the sixth.
Thanks to Harrington's stellar start, the Camel offense relaxed and found a way to get to Asheville starter Jacob Edwards and then the Bulldog bullpen. Campbell was especially dangerous in the late going as it scored 12 runs in the final three innings to fuel a 17-4 victory in game two.
The Bulldogs were led in game two by the tandem of Freeberger and Preslar as each player logged two hits. Wade Chandler, who entered the game late for Freeberger, picked up an RBI triple and scored to help Asheville add a pair of runs in the eighth.
As mentioned earlier, Edwards got the starting assignment for Asheville in game two. Edwards, who took the loss and saw his record dip to 1-4, allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in four innings of work to go with four strikeouts. Following Edwards was five Bulldog relievers logged some time on the mound. Blake
Little posted the best outing of the bunch tossing a scoreless fifth inning and picked up a strikeout in the appearance.
Next Up – Asheville and Campbell will conclude the three-game series on Sunday. That contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
