Bulldogs Fall Twice to Conclude Series at Charleston Southern
03.13.2021 | Baseball
Game One Recap – The first game began with both teams putting together multi-run innings in the early going. Charleston Southern struck first with two runs in the second, but the Bulldogs answered in the third as Dominic Freeberger connected on a three-run home run to give Asheville its first lead of the afternoon. CSU responded with a home run of its own in the following half inning to regain the advantage before the Bulldogs promptly took it back with a two-run effort in the fourth.
The Buccaneer offense kept things rolling, scoring three in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, while CSU's pitchers were able to put up some zeroes in the middle innings to help Charleston Southern take game one, 15-5.
Asheville's big hit in game one was the three-run blast from Freeberger. It marked Freeberger's second long ball this season and brought his RBI total to a team-high 11. Grayson Preslar picked up the only other extra-base hit for the Bulldogs with a double that plated a run in the fourth. Cam Johnson posted the lone multi-hit day for the Bulldogs going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, and fellow freshman Ty Kaufman reached base twice on walks, drove in a run, and scored another.
Starter Jacob Edwards, whose record dipped to 1-3 with Saturday's loss, pitched the first 3.1 innings in game one allowing seven runs on nine hits to go with four strikeouts. Asheville would use four relievers after Edwards departed. The duo of Ethan Tressler and Trey Jernigan each struck out three hitters in their outings and Jay Allmer made his collegiate debut.
Game Two Recap – After two scoreless innings to begin game two, both offenses woke up in the third. First, an RBI single from Sebastian Dunn gave starter Ryan Douglas a 1-0 lead. The Buccaneer offense would answer in a big way against Douglas scoring five runs in the bottom of the third, which would end his day on the mound. CSU would add insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to finish off the victory over the Bulldogs, 9-1.
Asheville's offense was limited to five singles and five walks in game two. Dunn and Michael Groves each had a base hit and a walk in the contest, while Kaufman reached twice and scored Asheville's run.
Douglas saw his record dip to 0-2 on the season after surrendering four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. Three other Bulldogs logged some innings in game two. Kole Harris struck out three Buccaneers in 1.1 innings, and Chris Banks closed the contest tossing two scoreless innings.
Next Up – Asheville will be back in action on Tuesday as it makes the short trip to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate. The first pitch for that contest is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
