USC Upstate Rallies Late to Upend Bulldogs, 4-1
03.17.2021 | Baseball
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team and USC Upstate were tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning before the latter rallied to eventually upend the Bulldogs by a score of 4-1 Wednesday afternoon in Big South action.
In one of the lowest-scoring games of the season to this point, Upstate struck first, forcing in a run on an RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Both pitching staffs were on their game as neither team cracked the scoreboard until the seventh inning.
Michael Groves got things started for Asheville in the seventh with a single to rightfield. After a flyout, a key hit-and-run single from PJ Heintz moved Groves up to third with one out. Cam Johnson would drive in Asheville's lone run of the day with a sacrifice fly to plate Groves to tie the score at one.
The Spartans quickly answered in their half of the seventh. Upstate used three singles and a double to fuel a three-run outburst to pull back in front, 4-1. The rally put together by the Spartans proved to be enough as they went on to win Wednesday's game by that score.
Grayson Preslar led the Bulldog hitters reaching base three times with a double and a pair of walks on the day. In addition to the base hits mentioned above, Dominic Freeberger, Brandon Lankford, and Sebastian Dunn also added to the Bulldog hit total with a single apiece.
Eight different Asheville pitchers logged time on the mound Wednesday. Kole Harris got the starting assignment, which was the first of his collegiate career. Harris allowed one run on one hit in two innings. Six of the eight Bulldogs tossed scoreless outings on the day. The tandem of Jacob Edwards and Chris Banks were especially sharp as both pitchers did not allow a baserunner in their respective appearances.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend as they welcome Campbell for a three-game series at Greenwood Field. The series will begin with a single game Friday (5 p.m.) followed by a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.). All three games can be watched on ESPN+.
