Daughtry's overtime goal lifts Asheville over Winthrop 2-1

02.28.2021 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - After nearly 100 minutes of play, Colin Daughtry's left-footed strike in the first overtime catapulted the UNC Asheville men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Winthrop at Greenwood Field Sunday afternoon.

"We couldn't be more excited and proud of our group today," said head coach Mick Giordano. "They faced adversity, stuck together and found a way to take away all three points. We'll continue to learn and must continue to improve, but the staff think we showed a lot with today. We will enjoy this one, but come tomorrow the focus moves to our next game."

The Bulldogs were active all day, outshooting the Eagles 17-12, with five shots on goal. Captain Taylor Durall registered the equalizer in the 47th minute, setting up Daughtry's overtime heroics. Leon Musial had another solid outing in net, totaling two saves in the effort. Miles Peay and Dominic Miller set up the pair of goals, while Asheville totaled seven corners as a squad.

Asheville moves to 2-0 on the young season, traveling to Campbell next Sunday for its first road contest of the season. The last time the Bulldogs started 2-0 against Big South foes was in 2016 (Longwood, Liberty), and the last time Asheville began a season 2-0 overall was in 2001.

"This is a special group that truly embodies every single one of our core values," Giordano said. "The work they put in last fall with extra fitness sessions showed today as we could have run for another 30 minutes!"

The Bulldogs controlled the ball early, but each team was eager to score first as they traded offsides and throw-ins. Just when it looked like Winthrop was going to have the first scoring opportunity, Sean McGinty recovered nicely to make a shot-saving tackle and give Asheville the ball back. Peay, Durall and Evans each had chances but could not convert. As time winded down in the first, Grayson Woodard swung the ball into the box where Vicaria Barker was able to get enough of a header to score the first goal of the game.

The Bulldogs wasted no time evening the game in the second, as Peay fed the ball near the top of the box to Durall, who fired it home to make the score 1-1. With each side going for the game-winner, the game got a bit chippy, with the teams each getting two yellow cards and a red card. With 10 men, Asheville pressed, getting a corner kick and shots from Durall and Gavin Long in the 84th minute. Neither team could break the stalemate, sending the game into overtime.

Winthrop grabbed the first scoring opportunity in overtime with a corner before the Bulldogs registered two of their own. In waning seconds of OT, Miller collected the loose ball and played it to Daughtry at the top of the box who turned, took a dribble and drilled a shot that would deflect off the goalkeeper and go into the net for the 2-1 victory.

"Thank you again to every person at UNC Asheville for making this game happen," said Giordano. "From our grounds crew, to admin, even the other coaches helping out, this wouldn't be possible without them!"
