Men’s soccer falls at No. 20 Campbell

Camels defeat Bulldogs 4-1

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After starting the season 2-0 for the first time since 2001, the UNC Asheville Men's Soccer Team traveled to No. 20 Campbell for a match on Sunday evening, falling to the Camels 4-1.

The preseason favorite to win the league, Campbell moves to 2-1-1 on the season. The Camels, who are ranked No. 20 in the College Soccer News Top 30 Poll, outshot Asheville 22-2, with nine shots being on frame. Campbell had three different goal scorers, with Daniel Hernandez striking twice. Noe Varner registered the lone shot on goal for Asheville, scoring the second goal of his collegiate career Sunday. In net, Leon Musial totaled a career-high five saves in the effort.

"Tough result on the road, but Campbell is ranked nationally for a reason," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Mick Giordano. "We had some extremely right moments, worked exceptionally hard and played good football at times, but just weren't completely sharp enough overall. That's on the staff and we have to be better for the group in those aspects. We will all learn from tonight and keep moving forward on a short week."

What's Next
Despite the loss, Asheville is still a strong 2-1 on the young season. The Bulldogs remain on the road for their first midweek game of the season, traveling to Radford for a matchup on Thursday.

How it Happened
After Campbell pushed a shot wide left in just the second minute, Asheville worked the ball into the offensive third where Miles Peay found Noe Varner who buried a shot to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. The Camels responded, and after registering their third corner kick would get a goal from Dylan Sadler to equalize in the 11th. In the 30th minute, Campbell earned a free kick and cashed in, with Daniel Hernandez making the score 2-1. The pressure continued but Asheville would hold off as the sides went into halftime.

The Bulldogs opened up the second with a scoring opportunity from Gavin Long who sent a head over the crossbar. In the 56th minute, Campbell earned another corner, this time with Jalen James scoring with his right foot. Leon Musial and the Asheville defense held against the barrage of shots from the Camels, but would concede once more in the 80th minute.
