JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a pair of games at East Tennessee State Saturday afternoon. ETSU took game one by a score of 6-3 before taking game two, 6-2. With Saturday's results, the Bulldogs move to 1-3 on the season.
Game One Recap – Asheville struck first in game one as it took advantage of an ETSU error to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Buccaneers promptly tied the game in the bottom half and added two more in the third. Easton Jones tied the game again with a two-run double in the fourth, but ETSU kept Asheville's offense quiet after that. An RBI double in the fifth, and a two-run home run in the eighth gave the Buccaneers enough offense to take game one, 6-3.
The Bulldogs doubled their hit total from Friday's game totaling eight hits in game one. Brandon Lankford picked up his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a double. PJ Heintz also logged a pair of hits on a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Kohl Abrams, Sebastian Dunn, and Ty Kaufman accounted for the rest of the Bulldog hit total.
Freshman Brett Johnson made the start on the mound Asheville in game one. Johnson worked the first 2.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out two. Gino Marra ended up taking the loss for the Bulldogs after working 2.2 innings allowing three hits and one run. Following Marra, Justin Honeycutt struck out three in two innings of work and, in doing so, extended his scoreless inning streak to four to begin his collegiate career.
Game Two Recap – Just like in game one, Asheville scored in the opening inning. This time Dunn plated Kaufman on a bunt single to give the Bulldogs the lead first for the fourth consecutive game. ETSU flexed its muscles to not only tie the game but also pull in front, slugging a pair of two-run home runs to go with single-run innings in the second and seventh to match its game one run total of six. Asheville got a run back in the sixth with an RBI double Chris Troost, but the Buccaneer bullpen held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the final three innings to finish off the 6-2 win.
The majority of the Bulldog offensive chances were generated from their two, three, four hitters. Dominic Freeberger, Dunn, and Lankford each finished game two with a pair of hits. Along with Troost's run-producing double, the only other Bulldog hit came from Heintz, who pinch-hit in the eighth.
Ryan Douglas got the starting nod for Asheville in game two and fared well in his first start in 2021. Douglas worked the first four innings, allowing one run on four hits and struck out four. The loss would go to the pitcher that followed Douglas, and that was Ethan Tressler. Tressler worked 1.2 innings, struck out two, but allowed one of the two home runs and two other ETSU hits.
Next Up - Asheville will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Wofford in its home opener at Greenwood Field. Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch and can be watched on ESPN+.
