Wofford Rallies to Clip Bulldogs in Extra Innings, 10-9
03.02.2021 | Baseball
Dominic Freeberger led the way for the Bulldog offense Tuesday going 2-for-6 with four RBI. Sebastian Dunn and Easton Jones also finished the day with two hits apiece. Ty Kaufman, Brandon Lankford and Drew Bristow also collected hits in the contest.
Asheville had nine different pitchers take the mound against the Terriers. Two Bulldogs in Justin Honeycutt and Kole Harris logged multiple scoreless innings to pace the pitching staff's efforts. Gino Marra ended up getting the loss after working the 11th inning allowing one run on a pair of hits. Marra's 2021 record moves to 0-2 with Tuesday's decision.
As mentioned earlier, both teams had times Tuesday where they were in control. Asheville struck first with an RBI double from Freeberger plated Kaufman that made the score 1-0 Bulldogs. It marks the fifth straight game the Bulldogs have scored first.
Wofford would quickly answer in the top of the second with a pair of run-scoring doubles to give it their first lead of the game, 3-1. The Bulldogs got one back in their half of the second, but their big inning came in the fourth, where they sent 11 men to the plate, totaled four hits, and scored six times to go up 8-3.
Credit goes to the Terriers as they gradually chipped away at the Bulldog lead through the middle innings and late into the game. Wofford broke through with a two-run single in the eighth to put them up 9-8. Dunn would tie the game in Asheville's eighth with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 9-9.
After scoreless ninth and tenth innings, the eventual game-winning run occurred in the 11th. A single and a hit batter gave the Terriers runner on before a key pinch-hit single plated what proved to be the winning run.
Asheville will return to the diamond this weekend as it opens Big South play at Presbyterian. The Bulldogs and Blue Hose are scheduled to meet three times with one meeting Friday (2 p.m.) and a pair Saturday (10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m.). Both of Saturday's games can be seen on ESPN+.
