02.25.2021 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will travel to take on East Tennessee State in a three-game series this weekend. The Bulldogs and Buccaneers will play once on Friday, followed by a doubleheader Saturday. Friday's action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., while Saturday's twin bill is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Probable Pitching Matchups
Game One – LHP Jacob Edwards (AVL) vs. RHP Hunter Loyd (ETSU)
Game Two – RHP Caleb Cross (AVL) vs. LHP Colby Stuart (ETSU)
Game Three – RHP Ryan Douglas (AVL) vs. RHP Hunter Townsend (ETSU)
Last Time Out – Asheville picked up a 10-4 victory at Western Carolina on Tuesday in its 2021 season opener. It marks the first time the Bulldogs have started a season 1-0 since 2014, and they improve to 7-1 in the last eight games against WCU.
Ode to the Offense – The Bulldogs came out ready to hit in Tuesday's season opener. Overall, Asheville totaled 14 hits, scored 10 runs, and drew seven walks against the Catamounts. The Bulldogs' 10 runs are the most by the team in a game since they scored 13 at Appalachian State back on May 14, 2019.
Stellar Debuts – One of the leaders for Asheville offensively in the season opener was freshman Ty Kaufman. Kaufman went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and notched a sacrifice bunt in his collegiate debut. Fellow freshmen Justin Honeycutt and Caleb Cross also had nice debuts in their first games as Bulldogs as each threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Bolstered by the Bullpen – Another key in Asheville's win over WCU was the work by its relievers. Lefthander JP Perez started things off by getting out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the second inning. Perez threw a scoreless frame in the third and was followed by four other Bulldogs to hold Western Carolina's offense scoreless for the rest of the game.
About ETSU – ETSU comes into the weekend series with the Bulldogs sporting a 2-2 record so far in 2021. The Buccaneers took two of three from Northern Kentucky to open the season but dropped a close 5-4 decision to Appalachian State on Tuesday. ETSU's strength through four games has been its pitching staff. Collectively, ETSU has a team ERA of 3.25 and is holding opponents to a .202 batting average. The Buccaneer pitchers are also averaging more than a strikeout per inning pitched with 42 strikeouts in 36 innings thrown.
Series Rewind vs. ETSU – Asheville and ETSU have met a total of 60 times over the years. The Buccaneers have won 34 of those meetings, including the last three matchups. The Bulldogs' last win over ETSU came on May 16, 2017, in Johnson City, 6-4.
