JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2021 season Friday evening as it fell at East Tennessee State by a score of 9-1. The defeat moves Asheville's record to 1-1 on the young season.
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Asheville struck first in the third as a groundout by Dominic Freeberger plated Drew Bristow to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. However, ETSU quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. The Buccaneers then hit a solo home run in the fourth, tacked on three in the fifth, and scored four more in the seventh to run away from the Bulldogs, 9-1.
Offensively, the Bulldogs totaled four hits and drew two walks against the ETSU pitching staff. Ty Kaufman continued his hot start offensively to begin his collegiate career going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to boost his batting average to .714 through two games. Chris Troost picked up a single, and Freeberger not only drove in Asheville's lone run of the game but also notched its only extra-base hit of the contest with a double in the sixth.
Junior Jacob Edwards made his second consecutive start on the mound for Asheville and ended up taking the loss. Edwards, whose record moves to 1-1, worked the game's first five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits to go with three strikeouts.
Following Edwards' departure, Trey Jernigan, Bryce Fisher, Ryan Stalker made their 2021 debuts. Jernigan picked up three strikeouts in his outing but ran into some trouble during his second inning with an error, two walks, and a two-run double. This led to Fisher being called upon. Fisher walked three in his collegiate debut but got Asheville out of the inning with just one more run allowed. Finally, Stalker was very efficient during the eighth inning. The Wycombe, Pennsylvania native struck out a pair of ETSU hitters and delivered nine strikes on 10 pitches thrown in the eighth.
The same two teams will meet again Saturday for a doubleheader in Johnson City. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 2 p.m.
