02.24.2021 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will close out its regular season home schedule on Thursday and Friday when it hosts Gardner-Webb for a pair of games at Kimmel Arena. Thursday's game is set for a 5 p.m. tip-off, while Friday's is scheduled for 3 p.m., with both games being available on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville picked up a 57-46 win over Winthrop last Saturday at home. The victory, which is the team's third straight, improved the Bulldogs' record to 10-10 overall and 9-6 in Big South action.
Corpening Named Big South Player of the Week – For her play in the three games last week, senior Amaryah Corpening was named the Big South's Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday. Corpening is the third different Bulldog to earn a weekly award from the conference this season, joining Nadiria Evans (Jan. 4 – Player of the Week) and Abigail Wilson (Feb. 1 – Freshman of the Week).
1,200-Point Club – With 14 points last Friday against Winthrop, Nadiria Evans became just the tenth Bulldog ever to score 1,200 points. Evans is the first Bulldog to accomplish this feat since Shonese Jones (2011-2015). Additionally, Evans is the sixth Bulldog to reach this mark since the program began competing at the Division I level.
Defense, Defense, Defense – A key reason in Asheville's current three-game winning streak has been its work defensively. No Bulldog opponent has scored more than 59 points during this stretch and they averaged just 47.3 points per game. Overall, Asheville is 7-0 this season when it holds its opponent to under 60 points.
Feeling at Home at Kimmel – This series against Gardner-Webb will be the final home games of the regular season for Asheville. The Bulldogs will be trying to seal its sixth consecutive winning season at home by taking at least one of the two games against GWU. Since the start of the 2015-16 season, the Bulldogs are 50-26 at Kimmel Arena, including a 6-4 record in 2020-21.
Postseason Push – With March beginning next week, the Bulldogs are making their annual push to shore up its position for the upcoming Big South Women's Basketball Tournament. Currently, Asheville sits in fourth place in the league standings. Once in the tournament, Asheville should have confidence regardless of the matchup. It has beaten every team in the conference at least once except for Campbell as the series between those two programs was postponed.
About Gardner-Webb – Gardner-Webb will come to Kimmel Arena with an 8-12 overall record that includes an 8-7 tally against Big South opponents. GWU is coming off a key 75-73 win over Longwood last Saturday. Like Asheville, Gardner-Webb has a trio of players averaging double figures, including Lauren Bevis (12.4 PPG) who paces the team in scoring.
Series Rewind vs. Gardner-Webb – Gardner-Webb has won 21 of the 34 all-time meetings between the two programs. However, lately, the series has been tightly contested as the two teams have split the last eight matchups.
How to Follow – As mentioned earlier, both games against Gardner-Webb will air on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available for both contests, and fans can also tune in each day to Rewind 100.3 to hear the radio call from Mike Gore.
