Bulldogs Pick Up Impressive Home Win Over Winthrop

02.19.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team picked up an impressive 61-37 victory over Winthrop Friday evening at Kimmel Arena. Nadiria Evans led Asheville with 14 points, and in doing so, became the 10th player in program history and the sixth during the Division I era to score 1,200 points.

In addition to Evans' 14 points, the Bulldogs used a balanced offense to get Friday's win. Kai Carter nearly had a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Amaryah Corpening and Abigail Wilson nearly notched double-doubles, too, with nine points and eight assists for Corpening and nine points and seven rebounds from Wilson. Freshman Jamia Blake also stepped up and scored a career-high seven points on a 3-for-3 effort from the field to pace Asheville's bench scoring.

Despite what the final score may suggest, Friday's game did not start smoothly for the Bulldogs. Winthrop netted 11 of the first 12 points to force Head Coach Honey Brown to take an early timeout. The timeout seemed to work as Asheville closed the first quarter scoring eight of the last 10 points to trim Winthrop's lead down to four, 13-9, after 10 minutes of play.

The game started to tip in Asheville's favor in the second quarter. After a pair of quick steals that turned into easy layups, the Bulldogs seemed to find their shooting touch. Asheville shot 61.1 percent on 18 attempts from the field as a team, including a 3-for-7 effort from beyond the arc in the second quarter. The Bulldogs did a great job sharing the ball during this stretch as eight of the 11 made field goals were set up by assists. This improved offensive play was enough to not only erase Winthrop's entire lead but also build a sizable one for Asheville as the latter took a 34-23 lead into halftime.

When the two teams returned for the second half, the Bulldogs used defense to build their lead. Asheville outscored the Eagles 19-4 in the third quarter and held the Eagles to 2-for-15 shooting to widen its advantage. The four points allowed by Asheville in the third were the fewest by the team this season and the fewest in any quarter since January 28, 2020, when it held the same Winthrop program to four points in the first frame of that contest. Asheville would grow its lead to as many as 28 points early minutes in the fourth before eventually winning by 24, 61-37.

The Bulldogs, who are now 9-10 overall and 8-6 in Big South play, will aim for the sweep of the Eagles in Saturday's series finale. Tip-off for that game is 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
