Bulldogs Celebrate Senior Day with a Win Over Winthrop

02.20.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team celebrated the team's senior day with a 57-46 victory over Winthrop Saturday afternoon at Kimmel Arena. The win, which is the team's third in a row, boosts Asheville's record in Big South play to 9-6 and back to the .500 mark overall at 10-10.

Nadiria Evans led Asheville with 14 points on a 7-for-18 effort from the field. In addition to being the leading scorer, Evans also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a career-high eight assists. Amaryah Corpening was the only other Bulldog to finish the game in double figures with 11 points.

The first 20 minutes of Saturday's game were tightly contested as no lead was larger than two possessions for much of the half. Despite the closeness, Winthrop and Asheville generated offense in two distinctly different ways.

The Eagles relied heavily on free throws and shots inside the arc to score, while the Bulldog offense was powered mainly by 3-pointers. Eighteen of Asheville's 28 first-half points came via the 3-pointer. One of those threes came from Corpening late in the half to give the Bulldogs the biggest lead of the game to that point, 28-21, headed to the halftime break.

The early stages of the second half looked like the Bulldogs were poised to break the game open like they did Friday. Asheville led by as many as 13 points on a couple of different occasions. However, credit Winthrop as it rallied and was able to hang around. A made three from the Eagles made it 45-42 with a little under eight minutes to go.

With the game's result in the balance, the Bulldogs received key makes from 3-point range from Faith Adams and Corpening down the stretch, and Evans scored six of her 14 points in the fourth quarter to close the game on a 12-4 run and preserve the victory.

In addition to individual stats, the Bulldogs put together some stellar numbers as a team Saturday too. Asheville finished Saturday with 10 made 3-pointers, which marked a new season-high. The Bulldogs also held a decisive edge on the boards, out-rebounding Winthrop, 37-24. This stat continues a 2020-21 trend for Asheville improving to 9-2 this season when it holds the rebounding advantage.

Asheville's next scheduled
games are currently set for March 2-3 against Gardner-Webb at home.
