Women’s Basketball Returns Home to Host Winthrop
02.18.2021 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will return to Kimmel Arena on Friday and Saturday to host Winthrop in a key Big South series. Friday's game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip-off, while Saturday's contest is pegged for a 4 p.m. start time.
Last Time Out – The Bulldogs pulled off an exciting last-second victory out on the road Tuesday at Presbyterian, 61-59. The win improves Asheville's record to 8-10 overall and boosts its conference record above the .500 mark to 7-6.
Clutch Shot from Corpening – A significant reason for the Bulldog victory over PC was the play of senior Amaryah Corpening. Corpening, who hit a last-second 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs the late lead, finished with a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Nearing 1,200 Points – Nadiria Evans is closing in on another milestone. Evans, who joined the 1,000-point club earlier this season, needs eight more points to become just the tenth Bulldog ever to score 1,200 points. She'd be the first Bulldog to achieve this since Shonese Jones (2011-15), who finished her time in Asheville with 1,411 points.
Record Watch – Evans, who is also the Big South's current scoring leader averaging 18.7 points per game, has a chance to break the program's record for free throws made in a season. The current record is 146 by Amanda Elder in 2006-07, and Evans, who has 113 makes from the line, would need to make 34 more free throws to break this record.
Postseason Push – This weekend's series will significantly impact the Bulldogs as they try to shore up or improve its seeding for the upcoming Big South Women's Basketball Tournament. Asheville, who will host Gardner-Webb on March 2-3, currently sits tied for fourth in the conference with a 7-6 record with four games to go.
About Winthrop – Winthrop will come to Asheville with a 6-13 overall record and a 5-11 mark within Big South play. The Eagles have been a different team based upon where they play as they are 4-4 at home compared to 2-9 on the road. A player to watch for Winthrop is Myra Strickland, as she is the lone Eagle averaging double figures (10.9 PPG) this season.
Series History vs. Winthrop – Overall, the Winthrop and UNC Asheville series has been even over the years, with the Eagles holding the slight 39-38 edge. However, lately, the Bulldogs have dominated the matchups as they have won the last 10 meetings between the two programs. Winthrop's last victory over Asheville came on February 7, 2015, 57-54.
How to Follow – Both games this weekend can be watched on ESPN+ or listened to on Rewind 100.3. Live stats will also be available each day. Additionally, Friday's game will also air locally in the Asheville area on CW62.
