Bulldogs rally but drop a road contest at Furman, 64-49

11.20.2021 | Women's Basketball

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team mounted a second half rally on the road at Furman on Saturday but ultimately fell to the Paladins, 64-49. With the loss, Asheville is now 2-2 on the young season.

"I was pleased at times with our defensive execution," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "We needed a few more key stops to keep our run going in the second half. I did think we got some open looks throughout the game. Now we work on getting grittier and knock down open 3's, and we'll be where we need to be."

Neither team had much luck offensively in the opening two quarters of Saturday's contest. Asheville knocked down a couple of 3-pointers in the first quarter for the majority of its scoring. In the second quarter, Maliyah Lockett drained a pair of shots late in the frame to account for most of the Bulldog offense.

However, the difference in the first two quarters was free throws and Furman's Tierra Hodges. First, the Paladins converted on 10 of their 12 attempts from the free throw in the opening 20 minutes. Hodges, meanwhile, led all scorers with 15 points. With these factors working together, Furman held a 29-16 lead at the halftime break.

Both Asheville's and Furman's offenses started to click in the second half. Nadiria Evans was on fire in the third quarter netting 16 points in that 10-minute span alone. Thanks to contributions by Evans and the rest of the Bulldogs, Asheville cut the deficit all the way down to three points, 38-35, with a little over two minutes to play in the third.

Despite this comeback attempt by Asheville, Furman kept attacking the Bulldog defense and getting to the line with some clutch made field goals mixed in down the stretch to finish off the 64-49 victory. The Paladins finished Saturday's contest going 21-for-26 from the free-throw line compared to 2-for-3 for Asheville.

Asheville will be back in action next Tuesday when it visits another Southern Conference opponent, Wofford. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Terriers is scheduled for 6 p.m.
