Bulldogs return to the win column with a 70-64 victory at Wofford

11.23.2021 | Women's Basketball

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team came away with an impressive 70-64 road victory at Wofford on Tuesday night. With Tuesday's victory, the Bulldogs improve to 3-2 on the 2021-22 season.

Asheville had a few standout statistical performances to fuel Tuesday's win. Kai Carter netted a season-high 21 points. Nadiria Evans added 18 points of her own, while Amanda Blake had her best game as a Bulldog to date setting new career-highs with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The first 20 minutes between the Bulldogs and Terriers were highly competitive. No lead grew to double figures in the first half. Asheville did have a couple of nine-point leads, including with 7:25 to go in the half as Jamia Blake knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 25-16 Asheville.

Wofford, however, battled back for the remaining seven minutes of the half. The Terriers were able to trim Asheville's lead down to three points, 35-32, heading into the second half.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Bulldogs quickly built their lead back up. Asheville outscored Wofford 17-6 in the third, thanks to the contributions of several different players. Five different Bulldogs netted at least one point in the stellar third quarter. Thanks to this effort, Asheville built its lead to as many as 14 points, which is what it led by heading to the fourth quarter, 52-38.

Facing a double-digit hole to dig out of, Wofford continued to chip away at the Bulldog lead. The Terriers nearly eclipsed their point total from the first three quarters totaling 26 points. Carter and Amanda Blake, however, kept Asheville rolling in the fourth, combining for all 18 of the Bulldogs' points in the frame. Carter scored 10 of her 21 points in the fourth, while Blake netted eight in the final frame. With Carter and Blake coming through with clutch buckets late in the game, the Bulldogs held on for the 70-64 win. It marked Asheville's first win at Wofford since November 2015.

Asheville will return to action on Sunday when it welcomes Appalachian State to Kimmel Arena for a non-conference tilt. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Mountaineers is set for 2 p.m. The game can be watched on ESPN+ or locally on CW62 as it is the Ingles "Game of the Week".
