Women’s Basketball returns home to host Appalachian State on Sunday

11.27.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will be back in action on Sunday as it welcomes Appalachian State to Kimmel Arena for a non-conference matchup. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Mountaineers is set for 2 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN+ or locally on CW62 as part of the Ingles "Game of the Week" lineup.

Last Time Out – Asheville picked up a stellar road victory at Wofford last Tuesday by a score of 70-64. Three Bulldogs finished in double figures to fuel the victory, including a season-high 21-point effort from Kai Carter. With the win, the Bulldogs are now 3-2 entering the final days of November.

Scoring = Success – Tuesday's victory at Wofford continues a trend for Asheville over the last two seasons. During Head Coach Honey Brown's tenure leading the Bulldogs, Asheville is an impressive 12-5 when scoring 60 points or more in a game. However, when the Bulldogs do not reach that magic number, they are just 1-12 during the last two seasons. Additionally, Asheville is a perfect 7-0 when netting 70 points or more during the same time frame.

Blake's Big Day – Amanda Blake was one of the three Bulldogs that finished Tuesday's game in double figures. Blake finished the night with one of her best performances as a Bulldog to date, posting 15 points and 13 rebounds, which both set new career-highs.

Steal Stats – Another crucial factor in Asheville winning three of its first five games of the season has been its ability to take the ball away from its opponent. Collectively, the Bulldogs rank second among Big South schools with 47 steals behind only High Point's 48. Individually, these efforts of taking the ball away have been led by Faith Adams (2nd – 12) and Jordaynia Ivie (T-3rd – 11), who rank in the top three in the conference in steals.

At Home in Kimmel Arena – Asheville returns home to Kimmel Arena on Sunday, looking to continue its stellar play on its home floor. Since the beginning of the 2018-19 season, the Bulldogs are 28-15 (.651 winning percentage) at Kimmel Arena. The 28 victories rank fourth among Big South schools in terms of wins on their respective home floors, trailing only High Point (38), Campbell (35), and Radford (29).

Nice November – Sunday's contest between Asheville and Appalachian State will be the final game in the month of November for the Bulldogs. If Asheville knocks off the Mountaineers, its 4-2 record in November will be its best showing in a season's first month since the 2016-17 season when the Bulldogs compiled a record of 4-1.

Scouting Appalachian State – Appalachian State will come to Asheville on Sunday with a 3-3 record, with victories coming against Lees-McRae, North Carolina Central, and Winston-Salem State. The Mountaineers currently have three players averaging double figures, with Janay Sanders leading the way averaging 14.5 points per contest.

Series Rewind vs. App State – Historically, the Mountaineers have held the edge over the Bulldogs, winning 15 of the 19 all-time meetings. One of those wins came last season as App State knocked off Asheville, 70-60, in Boone. The Bulldogs' last win in the series came on December 21, 2017, when they downed the Mountaineers, 69-60, in overtime at Kimmel Arena.

Player to Watch – A player to watch for the Bulldogs on Sunday is Kai Carter. In last season's game at App State, Carter nearly notched a double-double, finishing with 19 points and eight rebounds. Carter also knocked down four 3-pointers in that game.

How to Follow - As mentioned earlier, Sunday's game will air on ESPN+ and locally on CW62. Live stats will also be available for following, or fans can tune to Rewind 100.3 FM to hear the radio call from Jordan DeVere.
