Bulldogs mount second-half rally but fall to Appalachian State

11.28.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team mounted a second-half rally but ultimately fell short to Appalachian State by a score of 71-56 Sunday afternoon at Kimmel Arena. The loss evens Asheville's record at 3-3 on the season.

Asheville was led on Sunday by the tandem of Kai Carter and Nadiria Evans. Carter netted 20 points on a 9-for-16 effort from the field, while Evans scored a team-high 21 points and led the Bulldogs on the glass as well, totaling nine rebounds.

Appalachian State jumped on the Bulldogs right away on Sunday. App State scored the first 12 points of the contest to put Asheville in an early hole. The Bulldogs rebounded to close out the first quarter, but they still faced a 19-8 deficit after 10 minutes of action.

The Mountaineer offense continued to click in the second quarter. The deficit for Asheville grew to as many as 17 with a little under four minutes to play before halftime. The Bulldogs did close out the second quarter on a 7-2 run to close the gap to 12 as the teams adjourned to their locker rooms for halftime, 31-19.

Perhaps riding a little momentum from the final minutes of the second quarter, the Bulldogs came out for the third looking like a new team. Asheville shot 60 percent from the field in the third, knocking down nine of 15 attempts. The Bulldog offense was clicking so well that they outscored their output from the first two quarters in the third, netting 24 points. Asheville trailed by just four points, 47-43, heading to the fourth quarter thanks to the reinvigorated Bulldog offense.

A made jumper from Evans briefly got Asheville within one possession in the opening minutes of the fourth, 47-45. After a couple of made buckets from each team, Carter again made it a one-possession game, 53-50, with a little over seven minutes to go in regulation. However, App State took back control thanks to an 8-0 run to grow its lead back to double figures. Asheville would get back within eight points on a couple of occasions, but it ran out of time as App State went on to win, 71-56.

On Wednesday, Asheville will return to action when it welcomes Warren Wilson to Kimmel Arena for another non-conference tilt. The game, which is the program's annual Education Day, is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. and will air on ESPN+.
