Women’s Basketball continues its non-conference schedule Tuesday at Wofford

11.22.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will resume its non-conference schedule on Tuesday when it makes the short trip to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Terriers is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game can be seen on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville saw its two-game winning streak stopped Saturday at Furman as the Paladins downed the Bulldogs by a final score of 64-49. The loss pushes the Bulldogs' record to 2-2.

Leading the League in Scoring – One Asheville player that fared well at Furman was fifth-year senior Nadiria Evans. Evans scored a team-high 23 points, including 16 in the third quarter alone in Saturday's contest. It marked the third time in four games that Evans has led the Bulldogs on the scoresheet. Furthermore, Evans enters this week's action as the Big South's leading scorer averaging 19.0 points per contest.

Scoring = Success – It may sound simple, but a key to Asheville's success can be traced to how many points they score in a given game. During Head Coach Honey Brown's tenure leading the Bulldogs, Asheville is an impressive 11-5 when scoring 60 points or more in a game. However, when the Bulldogs do not reach that magic number, they are just 1-12 during the last two seasons. Additionally, Asheville is a perfect 6-0 when netting 70 points or more during the same time frame.

Pack the Defense – One facet the Bulldogs have to be happy with in the early going has been their work defensively. Asheville currently ranks third among Big South teams allowing just 56.5 points per game, while ranking second in the conference in opponent shooting percentage holding its opponents to a .360 shooting percentage from the field.

Faith finding her shooting touch – Another boost for the Bulldogs has been junior Faith Adams' ability to shoot from 3-point range. Adams has connected on seven of her 15 tries from beyond the arc (.467) through the first four games. Adams, who shot 23.2 percent from long range last season, ranks second among Big South players with at least 15 attempts in terms of 3-point field goal percentage.

Scouting Wofford – Wofford will enter Tuesday's matchup with Asheville with a 1-4 record. The Terriers did notch their first win of the 2021-22 campaign in their last time out vs. Southern Wesleyan, 106-55. Wofford, which has played a tough schedule with road trips to NC State and Florida in the season's first few weeks, is a team that loves to shoot from 3-point range as it averages nearly 22 attempts from long range per game.

Series Rewind vs. Wofford – The series between Wofford and Asheville has been split right down the middle, with each team having won eight times in the 16 games played. The Terriers have gotten the better of the Bulldogs in the last two matchups, including a 76-50 victory last December at Kimmel Arena. Asheville last defeated Wofford on November 25, 2018, by a score of 60-46 at home.
