Bulldogs Drop Close Game to Big South Leader Campbell

Buies Creek, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball fell, 59-52, to Big South leader Campbell Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.
Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs with 20 points. It is the fifth time this season that the junior guard has scored 20 points or more. Sonora Dengokl also scored in double figures as she finished with 13. Saturday was the 11th time this season that both Evans and Dengokl have scored in double-figures in the same game.
The Bulldogs shot 50% from the field through the first five minutes of play as they were down 12-9 at the first quarter media timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Bulldogs scored four unanswered points to take a one point lead with 1:48 left to play in the first quarter. Campbell grabbed the lead back as they were up by one with a score of 16-15 after the first quarter. Dengokl scored five points in the first 10 minutes while Jimeshia Lawson scored four while coming off the bench. The Bulldogs led the rebounding battle 9-4 in the first.
Campbell opened the second quarter with 3 unanswered points through the first two and half minutes of play forcing UNC Asheville to call a timeout with 7:29 left to play in the first half. After the timeout, the Camels scored again to extend their lead to 21-15 but UNC Asheville stayed right there with Campbell by going on a 4-0 run to force Campbell to use their first timeout with four minutes left in the first half. UNC Asheville took the lead, 24-23, with a minute left to play in the first half with four quick points from Skye Green as the sophomore forward knocked down two free throws and a layup in a span of two possessions. Campbell hit one shot in the final minute to take a 25-24 lead into the halftime break.
Both teams traded baskets through the first minute of the second half as the game was tied at 28 with 8:58 left to play in the third quarter. The Camels began to pull away as they led 35-29 with 6:35 left to play in the quarter. The Bulldogs answered back with a three point play from Nadiria Evans and a made free throw from Amaryah Corpening to bring the Bulldogs within two with a score of 35-33 with 4:46 left to play in the third. The Camels and the Bulldogs traded baskets once again over the final minutes of the third quarter as Campbell led 40-39 at the end of three.
Campbell extended their lead in the fourth quarter as they led by 10 with 5:39 left to play in the game. They extended that lead to 12 before Evans scored four points on back to back possessions to cut the deficit to single digits with just over two minutes left to play. Evans added another on a made free throw to bring the score to 55-48 with 1:40 left to play. Campbell made free throws down the stretch to secure the 59-52 victory.

The Bulldogs will return to the floor, Tuesday, February 11, as they travel to Clinton, S.C. for a 6 p.m. matchup with Presbyterian.
