Jordan-Brown Secures 500th Career Rebound as Bulldogs Fall to Gardner-Webb

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball started out hot, scoring 22 in the first quarter of play but couldn't maintain their lead late as the Bulldogs fell, 65-59, to Gardner-Webb, Tuesday evening inside Kimmel Arena.
Senior center Brooke Jordan-Brown corralled her 500th career rebound in the third quarter versus Gardner-Webb. Jordan-Brown is now the 19th Bulldog in history to reach the career mark of 500 rebounds. Her season-high in rebounds is 219 which she totaled last season and the Greenville, S.C. native currently leads the Big South Conference with 174 rebounds to this point in the 2019-20 season.
Since conference play began, Jordan-Brown has averaged 14 rebounds per game. She set a career-high in rebounds with 23 versus Presbyterian on Dec. 28. Jordan-Brown has secured 10 or more rebounds in nine games this season and the Bulldogs have won eight of those. Prior to Tuesday night, Jordan-Brown had corralled 16 or more rebounds in three straight games.
The Bulldogs' first quarter proved to be their best quarter of the game as UNC Asheville scored 22 points and allowed Gardner-Webb to score only 14. UNC Asheville held Gardner-Webb to only seven for most of the first 10 minutes as the Bulldogs went on a 13-0 scoring run for six minutes of the quarter. Six Bulldogs scored in the first quarter with Sonora Dengokl leading the way with seven while Amaryah Corpening and Tamiah Lewis each contributed with four.
Gardner-Webb scored first in the second quarter with a three to bring the deficit to only five but UNC Asheville responded with eight unanswered points to increase their lead to 30-17. Gardner-Webb then closed out the last two minutes of the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take a six point deficit with UNC Asheville leading 30-24 into the half. Dengokl scored four points in the quarter to bring her total to 11 while Jordan-Brown, Lewis and Evonna McGill all corralled two rebounds.
Gardner-Webb's late second quarter run continued into the third quarter as the UNC Asheville was outscored 21-10 in the third quarter of play. Dengokl scored four more points while McGill led the Bulldogs with three rebounds. UNC Asheville's strong first quarter helped them keep the game close as Gardner-Webb only had a five point lead heading into the fourth quarter despite their strong third quarter performance.
UNC Asheville's largest deficit of the fourth quarter was being down by seven with 5:02 left to play in the game. After the fourth quarter media timeout, UNC Asheville scored seven unanswered points to tie the game at 55 with just 2:28 left to play. The two teams traded buckets for another minute as UNC Asheville was down only one with 1:09 left to play. Gardner-Webb went on to make five free throws in the final minute of play to secure the 65-59 victory.
Nadiria Evans was a big part of the Bulldogs fourth quarter comeback that fell just short as the junior guard scored six points while going 4-4 from the free throw line. Jordan-Brown scored four in the final quarter of play.
UNC Asheville had two scorers in double-digits tonight as Dengokl led the Bulldogs with 18 while Jordan-Brown's four points in the fourth quarter gave her 11 for the game. Evans and Corpening each just narrowly missed on double-digit point totals as the two junior guards both ended with eight points each. Jordan-Brown and McGill each finished with seven rebounds while Dengokl and Jimeshia Lawson each corralled five.
The Bulldogs will be back on the court, Saturday, January 25, when they travel to Farmville, Va. for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Longwood Lancers.
