Corpening Scores 21 as Bulldogs Fall to Lancers

FARMVILLE, VA. – UNC Asheville women's basketball fell to Longwood, 73-56, Saturday afternoon inside Willett Hall in Farmville, Va.
Amaryah Corpening led the Bulldogs with 21 points in the game. Corpening's 21 points is a career-high for the junior and it is the first 20+ point game of her career. She also set career-highs in field goals made with seven and three-point field goals made with four. Corpening is now the third Bulldog to score 20+ points in a game this season and it is the fifth time that the Bulldogs have had a 20+ point scorer in a game this season.
The Bulldogs scored six points in the first two minutes of play with Corpening contributing all six by hitting two shots from three. The Bulldogs fell behind 11-6 in the next two minutes before going on a 5-0 run to tie things at 11. UNC Asheville found themselves down 13-11 at the first media timeout with 4:21 left to play in the quarter. A third three from Corpening gave her nine in the first quarter while Evonna McGill added a three-point play as the Bulldogs found themselves down 22-19 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Neither the Bulldogs nor the Lancers could buy a bucket to open the second quarter as neither team scored until Longwood made two free throws with 6:45 left to play in the half. The Bulldogs answered immediately as Brooke Jordan-Brown kept the Bulldogs within three by making a layup on the next Bulldog drive. After a stop on the defensive end of the floor, Corpening brought the Bulldogs within one with a layup of her own. Despite tying the game twice in the last 2:35 of play in the half, UNC Asheville found themselves down by five with a score of 39-34 at the halftime break.
Corpening set a new career-high in points in the second quarter as the junior guard totaled 14 points while going 5-8 in the first 20 minutes of play. The Morganton, N.C. native also set a career-high in three-pointers made as she totaled three through the first 10 minutes of play. All in all, seven Bulldogs scored in the first half of play with Zip Scott (five points) and Brooke Jordan-Brown (four points) sitting right behind Corpening.
The Bulldogs scored first in the second half as Corpening hit her sixth field goal of the game to bring the Bulldogs within three. The Lancers started to pull away but a Nadiria Evans' layup brought the Bulldogs within five with a score of 45-40 with six minutes left to play in the third. The Lancers responded with made three-pointers on consecutive drives over the next minute and a half to put the Bulldogs down 51-40 at the third quarter media timeout. The Lancers answered back with another run to put the Bulldogs down 64-45 at the end of the third.
The Bulldogs' third quarter deficit proved to be too much to overcome in the fourth quarter as UNC Asheville fell to Longwood, 73-56. The Bulldogs held the Lancers to only nine points in the final quarter of the game.
The Bulldogs will next travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Eagles of Winthrop, Tuesday, January 28.
