ROCK HILL, S.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball secured their third Big South road win of the season Tuesday night as they defeated Winthrop, 50-43, inside the Winthrop Coliseum.
Sonora Dengokl earned her second double-double of the season and third of her career by scoring 12 points and leading the Bulldogs with 11 rebounds. Nadiria Evans led all scorers in the game with 16 points. Evans just missed in getting her first career double-double as she tied her career high with nine rebounds.
UNC Asheville made a statement early with their defense as the Bulldogs held the Eagles scoreless through the first six minutes of play. The Bulldogs were up 5-0 at the first media timeout of the game. UNC Asheville closed out the final 4:46 of play in the quarter allowing only four points from the Eagles while scoring 10 as the Bulldogs had a 15-4 lead after the first quarter. UNC Asheville had six Bulldogs score in the quarter with Evans and Dengokl leading the team with four.
The Bulldogs opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run in the first two minutes and forced the Eagles to take their first timeout of the game with the Bulldogs up 19-4. Winthrop fought their way back into the game during the final eight minutes of the first half as the Bulldogs were outscored 18-8 in that time span for a halftime score of 27-22 in the Bulldogs favor. Evans led the Bulldogs with 10 points after the first 20 minutes of play. Jimeshia Lawson scored six points while going 3-3 from the field while coming off the bench. Four Bulldogs corralled at least four rebounds in the first half while Zip Scott led the team with five.
The Bulldogs opened the third quarter on a 9-4 run that included a two and a half minute span where UNC Asheville scored seven points while holding the Eagles scoreless. UNC Asheville was up by 10 at the third quarter media timeout as the Bulldogs led 36-26 with 4:06 left to play in the third. The two teams traded buckets over the final four minutes of the quarter as the Bulldogs maintained their 10 point lead with a score 42-32 at the end of three quarters.
The Bulldogs scored only four points through the first nine minutes and thirty seconds of the fourth quarter but the UNC Asheville defense kept the Bulldogs with a six point lead by allowing only eight points. Evans and Scott solidified the victory for the Bulldogs as they each sunk a pair of free throws in the final seconds to push the Bulldog lead out to 10 with 15 seconds to play.
The Bulldogs will return home to Kimmel Arena, Saturday, February 1, for a 2 p.m. matchup with Hampton.
