Game Notes | vs. Hampton

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball will take on the Pirates of Hampton for the second time this season in a 2 p.m. matchup, Saturday, Feb. 1, inside Kimmel Arena.

UNC Asheville (12-7, 6-4) has played to a 6-4 record in Big South Conference play. Three of the Bulldogs six victories have come from inside Kimmel Arena as UNC Asheville has defeated Presbyterian, Campbell and High Point at home. The Bulldogs defeated USC Upstate in the Hodge Center for their first Big South road win of the season before taking down preseason favorite Radford inside the Dedmon Center a few days later. The Bulldogs grabbed another victory on the road Tuesday evening as they defeated Winthrop, 50-43, inside the Winthrop Coliseum.

Since conference play began on Dec. 28, two Bulldogs have averaged a double-digit point total as Nadiria Evans has scored 13.2 points per game in conference play while redshirt senior Sonora Dengokl is currently averaging 13 points per game through the first 10 Big South games of the season. Brooke Jordan-Brown is leading the Big South Conference with 12.6 rebounds a game since conference play began.

Hampton (11-8, 7-3) is currently in second place in the Big South Conference with a 7-3 record. They opened conference play with a loss to Winthrop before winning four straight. They have since lost to Campbell and High Point. The Pirates last time out came at home as they defeated Longwood 72-55.

This will be the fourth all-time matchup between the Bulldogs and the Pirates. The two programs met back in the 1995-96 season and then did not meet again until Hampton joined the Big South last season. The Pirates have come out on top in all three of the previous matchups including earlier this season when a slow start hampered the Bulldogs as Hampton claimed the 69-58 victory in Hampton, Va. This will be Hampton's second trip to Kimmel Arena.

Notably
  • The Bulldogs got back into the win column Tuesday evening as UNC Asheville picked up a, 50-43, road victory over Winthrop in the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, SC. Sonora Dengokl secured her third double-double of the season as she scored 12 points and corralled 11 rebounds. Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs with 16 points while she just missed on her first career double-double as she tied her career-high with nine rebounds.
  • The Bulldogs have now defeated Winthrop in nine straight matchups.
  • Redshirt senior Sonora Dengokl has averaged 13 points per game since Big South play began. In fact, she has scored double-digit points in eight of the 10 conference games the Bulldogs have played this season. The Sumter, SC native is currently sitting at 986 career points, leaving her just 14 points shy of the 1,000 point total for her career.
  • Senior center Brooke Jordan-Brown corralled her 500th career rebound versus Gardner-Webb on Jan. 21. The Greenville, SC native is now the 19th person in UNC Asheville history to reach the total. She corralled a career-high 23 rebounds in UNC Asheville's conference opening win against Presbyterian. Her 23 rebounds versus Presbyterian are only five short of the UNC Asheville DI record and tied the Big South record for rebounds in a league game. She has averaged 12.6 rebounds per game since Big South Conference play began on December 28.
  • On Jan. 25 versus Longwood, Amaryah Corpening had a career day as she set career-highs in points (21), FG made (7), 3-pt. FG made (4) and blocks (2).  It was the fifth time this season that a Bulldog has scored 20+ points in a game and Corpening is one of three Bulldogs to score 20 or more points in a game this season. She is also the second Bulldog to hit four three-pointers in a game this season.
  • UNC Asheville currently ranks 19th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game and 18th in rebounding margin. UNC Asheville is also 22rd in total rebounds per game. The Bulldogs sit atop the Big South in all three categories. The Bulldogs have won or tied in the rebounding battle in 17 of their 19 games this season.
  • UNC Asheville is 23rd in the nation in fewest points allowed and is currently second in the Big South in the category. UNC Asheville has allowed 60 points or less in all 12 of their victories this season.
