01.14.2020 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball fell to Charleston Southern, 60-48, Tuesday evening inside Kimmel Arena.
Senior captains Sonora Dengokl and Brooke Jordan-Brown each recorded double-doubles in the loss. Jordan-Brown led the Bulldogs in both points with 14 and rebounds with 17 while Dengokl contributed with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan-Brown has recorded four double-doubles this season while this is the second of the season for Dengokl. The duo has accomplished the feat in the same game twice after also doing it at Hampton earlier this season.
Nadiria Evans just missed on her first career double-double as the junior guard recorded 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Four Bulldogs recorded a double-digit scoring total as Jordan-Brown led with 14 while Dengokl, Evans and freshman Kai Carter all finished with 10 points. It is the third time this season that UNC Asheville has had four scorers with 10 points or more.
UNC Asheville jumped on the board first as Jordan-Brown added a layup a minute and a half into the game to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Over the next minute, the Bulldogs would add four more off an Evans' layup and two Jordan-Brown free throws while also allowing a layup from the Bucs for a score of 6-2 with 7:31 left to play in the first quarter. That four point lead would end up being the Bulldogs' largest lead of the game as Charleston Southern and UNC Asheville would change leads seven times throughout the game.
The Bulldog offense struggled in the first quarter as they shot 3-21 from the field. The Bulldog defense started out strong as though as the score was tied 11-11 at the end of the first quarter. Jordan-Brown managed to score six points through the first 10 minutes and corralled five rebounds, four on the offensive end of the floor. UNC Asheville cleaned up on the boards in the first quarter as the Bulldogs brought in a total of 20 rebounds in the first. 11 of those boards were brought in on the offensive end of the floor. Eight different Bulldogs recorded a rebound in the quarter with Jordan-Brown and Dengokl each leading with five.
The Bulldogs found themselves down 19-16 with 46 seconds left to play in the first half before Evans knocked down the first three-pointer of the game for the Bulldogs to tie it up at 19. The Buccaneers managed to snag the lead back with a layup with 12 seconds to go but Amaryah Corpening found Evans again who knocked down her second consecutive three as time expired to give the Bulldogs the 22-21 halftime lead.
The back and forth game continued into the third quarter as Charleston Southern outscored the Bulldogs 18-17 to even the score at 39 going into the final quarter of play. Jordan-Brown scored six more points in the quarter and secured five more rebounds.
The Bulldogs found themselves down seven with 5:57 left to play in the game. Carter stepped up in a big way for the Bulldogs knocking down two three-pointers in consecutive possessions to bring the Bulldogs within one with 4:53 left to play. Unfortunately, that's as close as the Bulldogs would get to reclaiming the lead as Charleston Southern went on a run to secure the 60-48 victory for the Buccaneers.
The Bulldogs will now get a much needed break after a long stretch of games and will return to the court in a week for a matchup with Gardner-Webb, Tuesday, January 21, at 6 p.m. inside Kimmel Arena.
