BULLDOG BITES
Highlights
Tennessee opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Justin Ammons walked to jumpstart the Volunteer offense. Andre Lipcius drove in his teammate from third base on a double down the right field line to take the 1-0 lead.
Wilson tried to start a Bulldog rally in the second with an eight-pitch walk to put a runner on with no outs. However, the next Bulldog grounded into a double play to clear the bases, and the third out came via a strikeout.
The Volunteers added a pair of runs in the home half of the second, as Zach Daniels added a two-RBI double to right field. He plated Ricky Martinez and Connor Pavolony with two outs. UNC Asheville stopped the bleeding with an inning-ending double play.
After a scoreless third inning for both squads, the Bulldogs knotted the game at 3-all thanks to a game-tying home run from Wilson. Dominic Freeberger started the frame with Asheville's first hit, a single to center. Two batters later, Brandon Lankford walked to put two runners on base for the Bulldogs. Working the count full, Wilson uncorked on a three-run blast to left field to tie the game. The home run was his third of the year. The next two batters went down in order to keep the score level at 3-3.
Tennessee started to pull away again in the bottom of the fifth, as Lipcius and Alerick Soularie added back-to-back solo home runs to push the Volunteer lead to 5-3.
Asheville trimmed the deficit to one, 5-4, in the sixth, as Wilson played hero yet again. Freeberger started the frame with a walk, and two batters later, Lankford tallied a single to right field. With runners at the corners, Wilson smacked the second pitch he saw through the left side to make the game 5-4.
The Volunteers added a lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Evan Russell connected with a RBI single to left center. The RBI hit made the game 6-4.
The Bulldogs couldn't add a run in the eighth, and the Vols took advantage with a pair of runs via a Bulldog throwing error. The two unearned runs pushed the lead to 8-4.
The Bulldogs tried to start a late rally but couldn't against the nationally-ranked foes, as they fell 8-4.
Wilson led the UNC Asheville offense, as the senior utility player went 2-for-3. His first hit was a three-run blast to left field, while his second hit was a RBI single. He finished the game with four RBIs, a run and a walk.
Freeberger and Lankford were the other two Bulldogs to tally a hit, as Freeberger touched home a team-high two times.
As a team, UNC Asheville walked five times against a team that was averaging just over two walks a game.
JP Perez was one Bulldog that had some success on the hill on Tuesday, as the rookie tossed the eighth inning. He didn't allow a hit or run and faced the minimum.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 5-10 on the year, while No. 21 Tennessee advances to 16-1 on the season.
What's Next?
The Bulldogs and Vols will conclude the two-game series on Wednesday, March 13, as first pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
