UNC Asheville Set to Play Two Midweek Road Contests at Wofford and Furman

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After entertaining UMBC for a three-game series in Marion, N.C. last weekend, the UNC Asheville baseball team will now play two road midweek games, as the Bulldogs travel to Southern Conference members Wofford and Furman.
First pitch for both contests is set for 5 p.m., as the Bulldogs travel to Spartanburg, S.C. on Tuesday and to Greenville, S.C. on Wednesday.
About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville goes into the two-game midweek stretch with a 1-5 overall record. The Bulldogs picked up their first victory on Saturday, Feb. 23, as they tallied 21 total hits in the three-run win over UMBC.
In the three-game series at the Big League Camp in Marion, four Bulldogs paced the offense with four hits each. Joe Gruszka and Greg Gasparro each recorded four hits apiece, as they combined for five doubles and six RBIs. Chris Troost and Dominic Freeberger were the other two Bulldogs with a four-hit series. Troost connected with a solo home run in Saturday's contest, while Freeberger had a team-high four-RBI weekend. Danny Wilson, who posted three hits, connected with Asheville's second homer of the season, which was a two-run blast in the first inning on Saturday.
On the hill for Asheville, Ethan Tressler and Eric Whitecavage shined, as both Bulldogs appeared in two games against the Retrievers. Tressler worked 3.2 innings and only allowed two hits. He didn't surrender a walk or run and struck out one. Whitecavage posted 3.2 innings and also allowed two hits. He held the Retrievers off the scoreboard and struck out four batters. Kole Harris also had a strong outing, as he earned his first save of the season on Saturday. Jordan Carr had the longest start for the Bulldogs, as the left-handed pitcher worked 6.1 innings in the series opener. He scattered just four hits and struck out four. Blake Brown had a team-high seven strikeouts in just three innings of work.
Scouting Wofford
Wofford welcomes Asheville to Russell C. King Field with a 3-2 overall record. All five of their games have been played at home this year.
Fresh off a walk-off win against Radford, Brett Rodriguez posted the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning. The junior infielder is third on the team in batting average with a .350 clip. Mike Brown leads the team with a stunning .438 batting average in five starts. Lawson Hill has also started in all five games and totes a .368 batting average to go along with a team-high five RBIs.
Wofford's bullpen has shined in the 2019 campaign, as five Terriers have a 2.35 ERA or better. Matt Ellmyer, Rasesh Pandya and Ty Reginelli are the three Terriers who have yet to allow a run this year. Reece Maniscalco has appeared in two games and has allowed just one earned run. Jake Hershman rounds out the quality relievers for Wofford, as he has worked 7.2 innings this year and has a 2.35 ERA.
Scouting Furman
Furman, who plays one game on Monday, has a 1-3 overall record, as all four of their games have been at home.
The Paladins have six players hitting .300 or better this year. Logan Taplett has a team-leading .556 batting average in three games. John Michael Boswell and Banks Griffith are tied for the team-lead in total hits with seven each. Boswell has a team-best two home runs and seven RBIs.
Furman has a pair of key relievers in Rob Hughes and Hank Nichols. Nichols has appeared in three games this year and has yet to allow a run this season. Hughes has two relief outings this season and has struck out four batters in four innings of work.
