Edwards’ Two-Hit Game Not Enough in Season-Opening Loss

02.15.2019 | Baseball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite a two-hit night from rookie Jacob Edwards, the UNC Asheville baseball team fell to College of Charleston, 9-0, to open the 2019 season at Patriots Point.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

Edwards tallied Asheville's first hit of the 2019 season, which was a one-out single to left field in the first inning. He wasn't able to advance, as he was picked off later in the frame.

Redshirt junior Jordan Carr started the season opener red hot on the mound, as he went 1-2-3 in the first two innings. However, College of Charleston collected a pair of hits en route to the game's first run in the bottom of the third.

The Bulldogs tallied a lone hit in both the fourth and fifth innings, but both Bulldogs were left stranded.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars tacked on four insurance runs off three hits. They again struck for multiple runs two frames later, as they took a 9-0 lead.

Kole Harris knocked a two-out double in the top of the eighth inning for UNC Asheville, which was Asheville's first extra-base hit of the 2019 season.

The Bulldogs had a prime opportunity to score their first run of the season in the ninth inning. Dominic Freeberger started the inning with a four-pitch walk, and Wade Chandler followed with a single to left field to put two on base. After a strikeout, Anthony Cuozzi connected with a single to force the bases loaded. JP Perez came up in a pinch-hit situation, but the Mooresville, N.C. native grounded into a double play to end the game.

Edwards, who was one of two freshmen in the starting lineup for UNC Asheville, collected his first career multi-hit game. Both of his hits were singles. Harris finished the game going 1-for-4 with a double. Five other Bulldogs added hits in the season opener.

Carr, who was strong for several innings, finished the game going five innings with four strikeouts. Greg Gasparro worked a scoreless inning of relief, while Joe Sondock held the Cougars off the scoreboard in his first collegiate outing.

The Bulldogs fall to 0-1 on the year, and College of Charleston moves to 1-0.
