Lankford Homers Twice for Bulldogs in Narrow 6-5 Loss at College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Brandon Lankford homered twice for the Bulldogs, but College of Charleston was able to come from behind to pick up a 6-5 victory over UNC Asheville baseball on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Patriots Point.

Highlights
College of Charleston (2-0) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bulldogs (0-2) came roaring back in the top of the second.
Brandon Lankford captured the first run of the 2019 season for the Bulldogs when he started off the top of the second frame with a home run to left field.
UNC Asheville's Danny Wilson was then walked by College of Charleston starting pitcher Blake Robinson. The Bulldogs would next put a runner in scoring position after a Joe Gruszka single to right field. The pair would both be in scoring position shortly thereafter when a Robinson wild pitch moved them both up a base. Dominic Freeberger was then walked by Robinson to load the bases for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs would take advantage of the situation with Chris Troost singling down the left field line to plate Wilson and keep the bases loaded. A couple of a batters later, Robinson walked Kole Harris to score Gruszka and give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.
The three runs scored by the Bulldogs in the top of the second forced College of Charleston to make an early pitching change with Zach Williams brought in for the Cougars.
UNC Asheville would plate another in the top of the third to take 4-1 lead in game.
Freeberger singled to right center field in the inning to score Wilson, who had reached base on a Williams walk. Gruszka then moved Wilson over to scoring position on a ground out before Freeberger brought him home for the first RBI of his career.
Lankford would belt his second home run of the day in the top of the fifth inning to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead over the Cougars. The two home runs in the game allowed Lankford to reach 20 for his career as a Bulldog.
The Cougars would add two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the seventh to pull within one run of the Bulldogs at 5-4. College of Charleston threatened to score more in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded with two outs, but UNC Asheville reliever Eric Whitecavage struck out Cougar shortstop Clay Hunt to keep the Bulldogs ahead by one going to the final two innings.
The Cougars would take the win with single runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings.
College of Charleston narrowly out-hit the Bulldogs, 10-7, in the game.
Lankford was the only Bulldog with multiple hits in the game with two on his two home runs. He was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs overall.
Kole Harris (0-1) suffered the loss in the game. He pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Bulldogs.
Chaz Davey was the only Cougar with multiple hits with two. He was 2-of-5 in the game. Josh Price (1-0) pitched the final 3.1 innings for the Cougars to collect the win.
What's Next
UNC Asheville and College of Charleston will close out their season-opening three-game series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 17.
