Bulldogs Score First But Fall In Series Finale at College of Charleston

02.17.2019 | Baseball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite scoring the first runs of the game, the UNC Asheville baseball team dropped the series finale, 12-3, to College of Charleston on Sunday at Patriots Point.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

After two scoreless innings for both squads, UNC Asheville struck for the game's first runs in the top of the third. Following a leadoff walk from Kole Harris, the junior later swiped second base to move into scoring position. With two outs, Brandon Lankford doubled to left field to plate Harris. Danny Wilson followed with his second hit of the game, which was a RBI single to left field to give Asheville the 2-0 lead.

The lead quickly disappeared in the bottom of the third, as College of Charleston tacked on three runs off three hits.

The Bulldogs leveled the game at 3-all, as Jacob Edwards beat out a double play attempt to plate Jake Madole from third base.

The Cougars then regained the lead, 5-3, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Charleston held the Bulldog offense in-check in the fifth and sixth innings, and the Cougars took advantage with three runs in each of those frames to take an 11-3 advantage.

The Cougars tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 12-3 victory.

Wilson and Dominic Freeberger both had two-hit games to lead Asheville. Wilson and Lankford each tallied a RBI, and Lankford, Madole and Harris all touched home once.

Freeberger and Joe Sondock were two pitchers that had solid outings for the Bulldogs. Freeberger twirled one inning without allowing a hit, run or walk. Sondock tossed 0.2 frames and also didn't allow a hit, run or walk.

The Bulldogs fall to 0-3 on the year, and College of Charleston moves to 3-0.
