UMBC opened the scoring in the first inning, as the Retrievers connected with back-to-back hits. Joey Goodwin drove in Andres Machado with a double to right center to take the 1-0 lead.
UNC Asheville threatened in the home half of the first, as it accumulated two walks from Kole Harris and Carmine Pagano. However, they were left stranded following two straight fly outs.
The Retrievers tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Terrence Pinkston and Blaze O'Saben posted a double steal, which resulted in the second run for UMBC. AJ Wright followed with a sacrifice fly to give UMBC the three-run lead.
The Bulldogs again had a chance to plate runs in the bottom of the second but left a pair of Bulldogs on base.
After a 1-2-3 third inning from starting pitcher Jordan Carr, UNC Asheville threatened yet again in the bottom of the frame. Asheville worked the bases loaded thanks to walks from Dominic Freeberger and Danny Wilson along with a single from Brandon Lankford. However, UMBC got out of the bases-loaded jam unscathed.
The Bulldogs eventually put runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Andrew Friedholm led the frame off with a hit by pitch, and Chris Troost followed with a single up the middle. A batter later, Freeberger tallied a single up the middle to plate Friedholm from third base. After a walk and a strikeout, Wilson walked with the bases load to only make it a one-run deficit, 3-2.
Carr started to find a groove on the bump, as the redshirt junior went 1-2-3 for the next two innings. He was eventually lifted from his start in the seventh inning after a 104-pitch outing. The Retrievers nearly added insurance runs in the seventh, as UNC Asheville used four pitchers to keep the Retrievers off the scoreboard.
Asheville tried to start two-out magic in the home half of the seventh. Greg Gasparro walked on five pitches, and Joe Gruszka followed with a hit by pitch to put a runner in scoring position. Wade Chandler came off the bench to pinch hit but struck out to end the threat.
Again, UMBC had another chance to plate runs in the eighth, but behind senior right-handed pitcher Eric Whitecavage, UNC Asheville held UMBC to no runs.
Asheville couldn't muster a comeback in the final two innings, as it fell to UMBC, 3-2.
The Bulldogs had plenty of opportunities to score, but they left 12 players on base. As a team, they also drew nine walks in the nine-inning contest.
UMBC also had chances to score as well, as it left nine on base.
All five UNC Asheville pitchers combined for only one hit allowed after the second inning.
Pagano and Wilson were the only two players with two walks each, while five other Bulldogs walked once.
Freeberger, Lankford, Jake Madole and Troost each tallied a hit, as all four hits went for singles.
Carr was solid in his outing after settling down after his first two innings of work. The left-handed pitcher twirled 6.1 frames, scattered four hits, allowed three runs and struck out four.
Whitecavage posted 1.1 innings of work and struck out three of the eight batters he faced.
Joe Sondock finished the game with a scoreless outing of relief. He also struck out one UMBC player in the outing. The freshman has now appeared in three games and has yet to allow a run.
