About the Bulldogs

UNC Asheville opens the 2019 season under fifth-year head coach Scott Friedholm. On the 29-man roster, five are seniors, while a pair are redshirt juniors. Nearly 38 percent of the roster is comprised of freshmen (11), while over half (15) are sophomores or freshmen.

Between the five seniors on the roster (Austin Fahr, Andrew Friedholm, Carmine Pagano, Eric Whitecavage and Danny Wilson), they have appeared 537 total games. Including the two redshirt juniors that are graduating this year (Carr and Jake Madole), the seven Bulldogs have combined for 642 appearances.

Utility player Wilson headlines the offense for the Bulldogs, as the senior connected with a team-best .293 batting average last season. Wilson had 10 multi-hit games last year along with seven games with two or more RBIs. He was also dominant in league action last year, as he hit .362 in 105 at-bats. Fellow utility player Greg Gasparro really started to find his offensive groove late in 2018, as the current junior hit .333 in league games.

Also returning as offensive threats for UNC Asheville are Brandon Lankford, Pagano and Joe Gruszka. Lankford was second on the team with a .266 batting average. Pagano was right behind him with a .259 clip, as he was the only Bulldog to start in all 51 games last year. Gruszka, who started in 42 games, hit .255 and connected with a team-best four triples.

On the mound, UNC Asheville returns a slew of starters and relievers. The Bulldogs have Carr, Gasparro and Brown returning hoping to compete for a starting role. Carr, whose season was shortened due to injury, started nine games last year and had a team-high three wins. Gasparro, who was one of the most consistent starters for Asheville last season, started in 13 games and had a season-high 57.2 innings pitched. Brown found his role as a starting pitcher late in the season last year. The junior started in four and appeared in 11 contests.  He had a team-best 3.52 ERA in 30.2 innings of work in Big South contests.

Headlining the returning relievers is senior Eric Whitecavage. The submarine right-handed pitcher has appeared in 77 career games and totes a 4.44 career ERA. Kole Harris also looks to solidify his role as the Asheville closer, as the utility player had a team-high five saves last year. Tressler, Austin Fahr and Trey Jernigan are also returning for the 2019 season, as the trio looks to have an increased role on the mound.

Scouting the Cougars

College of Charleston had a strong season last year, where it went 36-19 overall and 15-8 in league games. The Cougars finished last year in third place in the CAA and were predicted to place fourth in 2019.

College of Charleston had two players picked to finish on the Preseason All-CAA Teams in seniors Dupree Hart and Logan McRae. Hart hit .326 with 14 doubles and 21 RBIs last season. McRae, who was tabbed to the All-CAA Third Team, hit .284 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs a year ago.

Danny Wondrack and Nathan Ocker also garnered preseason honors on the Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention squad. On top of his Honorable Mention accolade, Ocker was tabbed to the NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch list, as he was one of 75 relief pitchers to be on the preseason list.

Charleston is also returning another key hitter in Bradley Dixon. The redshirt senior hit .291 in 43 starts last year. He connected with 11 extra-base hits, including earning 33 RBIs.

The Cougars will send out two starting pitchers that were on the roster last year – McLarity and George. McLarty was a consistent starter last year, as he started 14 games and earned a 7-2 record with a 3.32 ERA. George, who only started in four games, toted a 4.50 ERA and will pitch on Sunday. Robinson is the third starting pitcher for the Cougars, as he will start on Saturday. The USC Sumter transfer went 8-4 last year with a 3.13 ERA and 90 strikeouts.
