Bulldogs Take Down South Carolina State Sunday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball secured its fifth win of the season Sunday afternoon inside Kimmel Arena with an 82-51 victory against South Carolina State.
Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs with 19 points. It was the third time this season that the junior guard has led the Bulldogs in points scored. Sonora Dengokl also recorded a double-digit scoring figure for the fourth time this season by scoring 13. Brooke Jordan-Brown led UNC Asheville on the boards with seven. Freshman Nia Washington corralled a career-high six rebounds.
The Bulldog offense started out slow as UNC Asheville scored only nine points in the first quarter of the game. Dengokl led with six of the nine points. The Bulldogs found themselves entering the second quarter with South Carolina State leading 18-9.
The slow start didn't last long as the Bulldogs were clicking on all cylinders in the second quarter. UNC Asheville grabbed a hold of the lead by scoring 22 points and allowed South Carolina State to answer with only six. The Bulldogs took a 31-24 lead into the half on the heels of Evans and Amaryah Corpening. Evans scored eight points in the quarter while Corpening totaled seven.
The Bulldogs increased their lead by outscoring South Carolina State 18-12 in the third quarter. Five different Bulldogs scored in the quarter as Evonna McGill led with six points. Jordan-Brown corralled four of her seven rebounds in the third quarter.
UNC Asheville broke the game open in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs broke their first half scoring total by scoring 33 in the fourth quarter alone. Evans led the Bulldogs with nine points while Skye Green scored a career high eight points in the quarter. Green went a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs proved once again just how effective they can be in the paint by scoring 50 of their 82 points from within the paint. The Bulldog bench proved to be a difference maker as they secured 37 points for UNC Asheville in the game. UNC Asheville took advantage of their second chance opportunities by scoring 17 second chance points while limiting South Carolina State to only four on their second chance opportunities.

UNC Asheville will return to the road for a matchup with its fourth Southern Conference opponent of the season when they take on Wofford, Sunday, December 15, at 2 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
