Bulldogs Unable to Tame Terriers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball dropped its second game of the season Sunday afternoon to the Terriers of Wofford by a score of 75-38, inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

The Bulldogs scored first on a layup by Sonora Dengokl and jumped out to a four point lead a minute later with a mid-range jumper from Nadiria Evans. The two teams then traded baskets for most of the quarter before Wofford went on a 9-0 run to end the first with a 19-12 lead. Dengokl led UNC Asheville with eight points and four rebounds in the opening quarter of the game.

Woffords' run continued into the second quarter as the Terriers scored 18 more points before halftime. The Bulldog offense struggled in the second quarter as the Terriers held UNC Asheville to only four points despite taking 13 shots in the quarter.

The Bulldogs began to find a groove by totaling 12 points in the third quarter of the game. Jimeshia Lawson led the Bulldogs with four points while Amaryah Corpening, Faith Adams, Brooke Jordan-Brown and Evonna McGill all added two points for their first scores of the game.  

Lawson led the Bulldogs once again in the fourth quarter of the game with four points while Corpening hit the first three of the game for the Bulldogs to bring her total to five. Dengokl led UNC Asheville with three rebounds in the final quarter.

The Bulldogs recorded four steals in the game with Dengokl and Adams each contributing one while Zip Scott secured two takeaways. Dengokl and McGill each blocked a shot in the game while Dengokl also led with eight rebounds.

Notably
  • UNC Asheville continues to be beasts on the boards as the Bulldogs outrebounded the Terriers 34-27 in the game. The Bulldogs recorded 14 of those rebounds on the offensive end of the court. UNC Asheville has now outrebounded their opponent in all seven games this season.
  • With 10 points in the game versus Wofford, Sonora Dengokl has now scored in double-figures in five of the Bulldogs' seven games this season.
  • With her sixth block of the season in the first quarter versus Wofford, Evonna McGill has now blocked a shot in three straight games dating back to Dec. 2nd.
  • UNC Asheville won the battle of the benches as the Bulldog bench outscored Woffords' bench 12-5.
  • Nadiria Evans and Sonora Dengokl each scored eight points in the first half of the game while Jimeshia Lawson hit the eight point total in the second half of the game.
  • The Bulldogs shot 88% from the free throw line while only missing one free throw in the game.
  • Sonora Dengokl led UNC Asheville with eight rebounds in the game.
Up Next
The Bulldogs will next travel to Florida for the Miami Holiday Classic, Friday-Saturday, December 20-21. UNC Asheville will take on the host of the tournament, the Miami Hurricanes, in a 12 p.m. matchup on Friday before facing off with Southern at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
