Despite Strong Second Half, Bulldogs Fall to Hurricanes in Opening Game of Miami Holiday Classic

12.20.2019 | Women's Basketball

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – UNC Asheville women's basketball dropped their first game of the Miami Holiday Classic, 75-46, to host Miami Friday afternoon inside the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

UNC Asheville overcame a slow start to the game to outscore ACC member Miami in the second half of the game. The Bulldogs put up 37 points in the final 20 minutes of play while the Hurricanes could only manage to score 30 against the Bulldog defense.
UNC Asheville took advantage of their foul shot opportunities as they made 11 free throws in the second half.

Nadiria Evans hit two field goals in the first two minutes of the game to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead. The Hurricanes then went on a 21-5 run to close out the final eight minutes of the quarter to take a 23-9 lead into the second quarter. Sonora Dengokl scored the final five points of the quarter for UNC Asheville while hitting three from the free throw line.

The Bulldogs surpassed their point total from the first half by scoring 10 in the third quarter to take a score of 62-19 into the final quarter of the game. Evans led UNC Asheville with six points in quarter three while Dengokl and Evonna McGill each added two points as well.

The fourth quarter proved to be the best quarter of the day for the Bulldogs as UNC Asheville scored 27 points and allowed Miami to score only 13 to close out the game. The Bulldogs shot 60% from the field in the fourth quarter and went four for seven from three. UNC Asheville's bench scored 17 points in the fourth quarter led by freshman Faith Adams with six and Tamiah Lewis with five. Amaryah Corpening hit the first two three-pointers of the game for the Bulldogs on back to back possessions midway through the fourth. Lewis and Kai Carter hit the Bulldogs other two shots from three in the quarter.

Dengokl just missed out on her sixth double-digit performance of the season by scoring nine in the game. Jimeshia Lawson led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds while corralling four of those on the offensive end of the floor. Brooke Jordan-Brown was next with five rebounds while Evonna McGill corralled four.
