Bulldogs Travel to South Florida for the Miami Holiday Classic

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – UNC Asheville women's basketball will travel to Coral Gables, Fla. this week for two games in the Miami Holiday Classic.

The Miami Holiday Classic is a three-team, four-game tournament hosted by the Miami Hurricanes inside the Watsco Center. UNC Asheville will play the first and the fourth games in the tournament.

The Bulldogs will tip-off against host Miami at 12 p.m., Friday, December 20 for their first game of the tournament and will return to the floor on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup with the Jaguars of Southern University.

UNC Asheville has jumped out to a 5-2 record to start the season as the Bulldogs enter their final weekend before Big South Conference play begins. The Bulldogs picked up wins against Lenoir-Rhyne, Western Carolina and ETSU to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2005. UNC Asheville then closed out a three-game homestand with back to back 30+ point victories against Montreat and South Carolina State. The Bulldogs scored 80+ points in both of those victories and it was the first consecutive 80+ point games for UNC Asheville since 2016. UNC Asheville has never faced Miami or Southern.

Miami has been ranked in the top 25 for much of the season but dropped outside of the top 25 in the latest rankings. They are 6-3 on the 2019-20 season with wins against Jackson State, North Florida, IUPUI, North Carolina A&T, Miami (Ohio) and Binghamton. The Hurricanes have fallen to #19 Depaul, #7 Oregon State and #14 Indiana.

Southern has played to a 2-7 record so far this season. They defeated Wiley College and Tougaloo College in their second and third games of the season and have since lost six straight to Wichita State, Nebraska, Texas, Rutgers, Fordham and Oklahoma State.

Notably
  • UNC Asheville has committed the 9th fewest turnovers of any team in the nation. Of the 348 Division I teams UNC Asheville currently ranks 9th in the fewest turnovers category.
  • UNC Asheville currently ranks 14th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game and 23rd in rebounding margin. UNC Asheville is also 57th in total rebounds per game. The Bulldogs sit atop the Big South in all three categories. The Bulldogs have outrebounded their opponent in every game this season.
  • UNC Asheville is 30th in the nation in fewest points allowed in the nation and is currently tops in the Big South in the category. UNC Asheville has allowed 60 points or less in five of their seven games this season.
  • UNC Asheville has been the best in the Big South to this point in the season at limiting three-pointers. The Bulldogs aren't just making noise in the Big South with their ability to limit the three as they are 87th in the nation in 3pt FG defense.
  • UNC Asheville scored 80+ points in consecutive games versus Montreat and SC State. The last time the Bulldogs had consecutive 80+ point games was in the 2015-16 season when the Bulldogs defeated Charleston Southern 91-68 and High Point 85-64 in back to back games.
  • The Bulldogs have found ways to be successful going to the basket as UNC Asheville scored a season-high 50 points from within the paint in the win against SC State on Dec. 8th. It is the second consecutive game that UNC Asheville has scored 40+ points from within the paint as UNC Asheville scored 94 points from within the paint in back to back wins to open the month of December. The Bulldogs have scored 230 of their total 453 points from within the paint this season.
