Bulldogs Close Out Trip to Florida with Win Over Southern

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – UNC Asheville women's basketball defeated Southern, 53-34, in their second game of the Miami Holiday Classic Saturday evening. The Bulldogs closed out the tournament with a 1-1 record and have now played to a 6-3 nonconference record.
Nadiria Evans and Amaryah Corpening came out firing as they helped the Bulldogs jump out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter. Evans scored four of the first 10 points while Corpening contributed the rest by knocking down two three-point shots. The Jaguars began to chip away at the lead as they cut it within four to close the quarter as UNC Asheville had a 12-8 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes.
The Bulldogs took a six point lead into the half as they scored 11 points in the second quarter of the game for a score of 23-17 after the first 20 minutes of play. Five different Bulldogs scored in the second quarter as the Bulldogs scored eight of their 11 points in the paint and their bench scored seven points in the quarter.
Jimeshia Lawson corralled five rebounds in the first half and Evonna McGill secured four as the Bulldogs led the rebounding total 22-17 at the half.
The Bulldogs attempted to break the game open in the third quarter as they scored 16 points. Evans led all UNC Asheville scorers with eight points in the quarter while going 2-2 from the field and hitting three free throws. Lawson and Brooke Jordan-Brown each secured three rebounds to lead the Bulldogs in the quarter.
The Bulldogs increased their lead to 19 in the fourth quarter while scoring 14 points and allowing the Jaguars to score only seven. Jordan-Brown and Zip Scott each scored four points while Evans, Corpening and Dengokl each scored two. UNC Asheville kept Southern scoreless for the final four minutes of the game as the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run in that span to give them the 19 point victory.
Evans led UNC Asheville with 16 points while also being named to the All-Tournament team for the Miami Holiday Classic. Corpening was the only other Bulldog to score in double digits as she scored 10 while going 4-8 from the field and 2-5 from three. For the third time this season, Jordan-Brown corralled 10 rebounds to bring her season total to 62 through nine games. Evans and Tamiah Lewis each grabbed two steals in the game. It was the third time this season that Evans has secured two or more steals while Lewis' two steals was a season high.
UNC Asheville will next open Big South Conference play when they host Presbyterian, Saturday, December 28, at 2 p.m. inside Kimmel Arena.
