High Point Narrowly Holds Off Bulldogs

HIGH POINT, N.C. – In a game where the score was tied 11 times and changed hands eight times, High Point was able to narrowly hold off UNC Asheville men's basketball, 65-61, at the Millis Center on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019.
UNC Asheville (2-19, 0-7 Big South) opened the game by racing out to a six-point advantage over the course of the first nine minutes of the contest. The Bulldogs owned a 15-9 lead after a Luke Lawson three-pointer with 11:15 left in the opening half of action.
The two teams would be tied at 17-all with 7:47 remaining in the first half.
The first half would close with High Point owning a 36-28 advantage at intermission. UNC Asheville ended the first half shooting 40 percent (10-of-25) as a team, while High Point (11-9, 4-2 Big South) closed the first stanza shooting 46.7 percent (14-of-30).
Lawson and DeVon Baker both had nine in the first half for the Bulldogs. Baker also had three assists in the first half.
The second half commenced with UNC Asheville going on a 9-2 run to pull within one of High Point at 38-37 after a Tajion Jones three-pointer with 16:20 left in the contest.
With 12:45 left in the game the two teams would be tied at 42-42 after another Jones trey. Jones would give the Bulldogs the lead at 44-42 with a jumper with 11:16 to go in the second half.
To take the lead, UNC Asheville outscored High Point, 16-6, over the course of the opening almost nine minutes of the second half.
UNC Asheville would take a three-point lead at 50-47 after Baker connected on a three-pointer with 8:51 to play in the game.
The two teams would keep trading baskets over the next few minutes with Asheville clinging to a one-point lead at 56-55 with just under four minutes remaining in the contest. The game would be tied at 59-59 after a Baker three-point play with 1:41 left in the contest.
High Point would be able to narrowly hold on for the win from there.
UNC Asheville closed out the game shooting 40.7 percent (22-of-54) as a team, while High Point shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53).
Baker led UNC Asheville with 25 points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds. He was one of three Bulldogs in double figures with Coty Jude and Jones both posting 10 points for the Bulldogs. Jude also had six boards. Jones had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Jahaad Proctor tied Baker for game-high honors in points with his 25 to lead High Point. He was the only Panther in double figures.

For the eighth time this season, DeVon Baker scored 20 or more points with his 25 at High Point. Baker has scored in double figures 17 times this season for the Bulldogs overall. He has scored in double figures in 12 out of UNC Asheville's last 13 games.
Second Half Step Up
Tajion Jones scored all 10 of his points in the second half. He was 4-of-7 from the field for the Bulldogs in the second stanza.

Jalen Seegars tied his career high in blocks with his three blocks in the game at High Point. Seegars now has three games this season where he has three blocks.

The matchup will be the 17th all-time meeting between the two institutions in a series that dates back to the 1970's. UNC Asheville owns a 10-6 all-time series lead with the Bulldogs taking an 82-70 victory over the Spartans last season at Kimmel Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017.
