Gilmore Double-Double Helps Propel Bulldogs to Home Big South Win Over USC Upstate

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Four players in double figures and a double-double from Donovan Gilmore helped lead UNC Asheville men's basketball to a 71-62 Big South Conference win over USC Upstate on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Kimmel Arena.

The game opened with UNC Asheville (3-19, 1-7 Big South) racing out to a 9-3 lead over the first almost three minutes. The Bulldogs would lead by 10 at 17-7 after a Gilmore layup with 13:38 to play in the first half.

UNC Asheville would still lead by nine at 25-16 with under eight left in the first half, but the Spartans would whittle the Bulldog lead down over the remaining minutes of the opening half.

The Spartans (6-18, 1-8 Big South) would lead 33-31 at intermission.

UNC Asheville shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27) as a team in the first half. USC Upstate shot 41.7 percent (10-of-24) as a team in the first stanza. Gilmore finished with 15 points in the first half.

The complexion of the game would change completely in the first few minutes of the second half with the Bulldogs opening the half on a 10-2 run to lead 41-35 after a Coty Jude three-pointer with 16:10 remaining in the game.

The Bulldogs would go on to lead by as many as 14 in the second half before emerging with the nine-point victory.

UNC Asheville shot 50 percent (23-of-46) as a team in the game. The Bulldogs limited USC Upstate to just 40.4 percent (21-of-52) shooting in the game.

Four Bulldogs finished in double figures led by Gilmore's double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. He was 6-of-8 from the field overall and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Gilmore had one assist and one steal in the game.

Jude ended his efforts with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting. He also had three rebounds, three steals and one block.

DeVon Baker put up his ninth 20 or more point performance of the year in UNC Asheville's win with Baker particularly being clutch in the final minutes of the game at the free throw line where he was 10-of-12. He also had four assists and three rebounds.

The final Bulldog in double figures was Tajion Jones, who ended his night with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and one block.

Malik Moore led USC Upstate in its loss with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Strong on the Boards

UNC Asheville out-rebounded USC Upstate, 40-25, in the game. The 40 rebounds were the second-most on the year for the Bulldogs as a team and the most in a NCAA Division I game.

Don's Second Double-Double Day
Donovan Gilmore's double-double against USC Upstate was the second of his career and his first in Big South Conference play. In finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds against USC Upstate, Gilmore secured five of his 11 rebounds on the offensive glass. The 11 rebounds tied Gilmore with Stephen Edoka for the single-game season high for the Bulldogs. Edoka brought down 11 rebounds in UNC Asheville's season-opening win over St. Andrews.

Strong From the Field
UNC Asheville shot 50 percent as a team in its win over USC Upstate to mark the third time this season the Bulldogs had finished a game shooting 50 percent or higher. The Bulldogs are 2-1 in the three games.

The Bulldogs will open the month of February by traveling to Boiling Springs, N.C. to face Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2. UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb will be taking the court against one another for the 49th time. UNC Asheville has picked up the win in the series in 15 of the last 19 meetings.
