UNC Asheville Returns to Action on Wednesday at North Carolina Central

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – With over a week off from playing on the diamond, the UNC Asheville baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, May 9, as the Bulldogs travel to NC Central for a mid-week contest at Durham Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
About the Bulldogs/Last Time Versus NC Central
UNC Asheville enters the mid-week contest with a 12-32 overall record on the year.
Danny Wilson paces the Bulldog offense, as he has a .287 clip on the year. He has eight extra-base hits along with 19 RBIs and 17 runs scored. Brandon Lankford leads the team in extra-base hits with 18, which includes 11 doubles and seven homers. Joe Zayatz is tied for the team-lead in doubles, as he has 11, and Carmine Pagano is the team's leading hitter, as he has 48 total hits on the year.
On the hill, Greg Gasparro has the best ERA (4.33) amongst the Bulldog starting rotation. He has twirled 54 frames and has held opponents to a .284 clip. Jordan Fulbright leads the squad with 44 strikeouts in 42 innings, and he has also limited batters to a .249 batting average, which ranks near the top in the Big South Conference. The last time UNC Asheville and NC Central met, the Eagles came out victorious, 6-3, at Greenwood Field. The Bulldogs led for four innings thanks to a lone run in the first inning. Wilson cracked a one-out single to score Pagano, which gave the Bulldogs the early lead. Both squads added on a pair of runs in the fifth, but the Eagles tacked on four runs in the seventh inning en route to the three-run win over the Bulldogs.
Pagano cracked three hits in the game to go along with a pair of RBIs. Zayatz, Wilson, Gasparro and Joe Gruszka all contributed a hit in the contest.
On the hill, seven different Bulldogs offered a scoreless outing. Zayatz, Beau Nichols, Trey Jernigan, Cody Wilson, Tripp Barfield and Harris all offered at least one inning of work without NC Central scoring a run.
Scouting the Eagles
NC Central enters the mid-week contest with a 27-23 overall record and an 11-13 mark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games. The Eagles play host to Davidson on Tuesday, May 8, before squaring off with the Bulldogs on Wednesday at Durham Athletic Park.
In its final conference series of the season, the Eagles dropped two of the games versus Florida A&M. NC Central claimed the nightcap of the Saturday doubleheader, 6-1, but dropped the series opener, 7-4, and the series finale, 7-5.
On the year, Corey Joyce leads the Eagle offense with a .372 batting average. The sophomore has started in 46 games and has collected 64 total hits. Of those hits, 21 have been extra-base hits, including a team-leading 15 doubles. He has 37 RBIs and has touched home 43 times. Josh Little, Marcus Washburn and Austin Vernon are the key relievers for the Eagles, as all three have appeared in at least 15 games and have a sub-3.70 ERA.
