Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short on Mother’s Day

05.13.2018 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite a ninth-inning rally, the UNC Asheville baseball team dropped the series finale to High Point, 8-4, on Sunday at Greenwood Field.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

High Point scratched across a run in the first inning. However, UNC Asheville starting pitcher, Nick Boyles, worked out of the jam, as he forced a fly out and a ground out to strand two Panthers in the frame.

Joe Zayatz started the offense for Asheville with a ringing double to left center in the first inning. Carmine Pagano followed with a hit by pitch, but a double play and a strikeout left Zayatz at third.

After a scoreless second inning for both squads, HPU tacked on a lone run in the top of the third off a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldog offense started to gain momentum and scored its first run of the contest. Danny Wilson cracked a leadoff single, and Greg Gasparro smacked his first double of the season. After a pop out, Chris Troost brought home Wilson off a sacrifice fly to make the game 3-1.

After stranding a pair of Panthers on base in the top of the sixth, UNC Asheville made it a one-run game, as Joe Gruszka connected with a RBI triple. It was his team-leading fourth triple of the season.

High Point doubled its advantage in the top of the seventh, as Jordan Sergent hit a solo homer to center.

In the final two innings of the contest, High Point added four more insurance runs to move its lead to 8-4.

The Bulldogs didn't give in though.

In the bottom of the ninth, Asheville tallied two hits and two walks. Gasparro smacked his second double of the game, which plated Asheville's third run of the contest. After a strikeout and a fly out, Jake Madole cracked a pinch-hit single to left center, which scored Gasparro, and Anthony Cuozzi followed with a five-pitch walk to put two Bulldogs on base. However, HPU made a pitching change, and the Panther closer forced a groundball to second to seal the 8-4 win.

Overall, three Bulldogs earned multi-hit games. Gasparro totaled three hits, which included a pair of doubles. He also earned a RBI and a run scored. Gruszka and Zayatz also knocked a pair of hits. Gruszka tallied a RBI, and Zayatz touched home once.

Wilson went 1-for-3, as he scored a team-high two times.

Madole rounded out the hits for Asheville, as he connected with a RBI single in the ninth.

Eric Whitecavage was the first reliever for UNC Asheville, and he went 2.2 innings and allowed a run with two strikeouts.

Jesse Juday also struck out a pair of Panthers, as he worked an inning.

Jordan Fulbright finished the game, as he tossed 0.2 frames. He didn't allow a walk or run.

The Bulldogs fall to 12-36 overall and 7-17 in Big South Conference play, and HPU moves to 28-20 overall and 16-8 in league play.
