Brown, Wilson Have Career Days in 7-1 Rout of Charleston Southern
05.17.2018 | Baseball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore Blake Brown and junior Danny Wilson had career days in the series opener at Charleston Southern, as the duo led the Bulldogs to a 7-1 rout of the Bucs on Thursday at CSU Ballpark.
Brown twirled seven innings and struck out seven. Both of which are single-game career highs for the right-handed pitcher. He did not allow a Buccaneer hit after the third inning.
Wilson cracked five hits and earned three RBIs. The five hits bested his single-game best by one, which he set earlier this season versus Presbyterian. The three-RBI game matches a single-game best for the utility player.

Highlights
The Bulldogs opened the game quickly, as they plated the game's first run. Joe Zayatz cranked a leadoff double to right field. After a groundout, Wilson smacked a double of his own to plate Zayatz easily.
In the bottom of the second, Charleston Southern knotted the game at 1-all, as Ryan Stoudemire knocked a leadoff solo home run.
UNC Asheville quickly responded in the top of the third to pull ahead, 2-1. With one out, Carmine Pagano and Wilson connected with back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Greg Gasparro followed with a RBI fielder's choice to score Pagano.
After a scoreless outing for both squads in the fourth, Asheville added a lone run in the fifth, as Gasparro connected with a two-out RBI single up the middle.
Up 3-1, the Bulldog offense added insurance runs in the sixth to pull its advantage to four runs. Tyler Serricchio led the inning off with a walk, and Chris Troost and Kole Harris followed with back-to-back singles to force the bases loaded. Following a strikeout, Zayatz was hit by a pitch to plate Serricchio. After a pitching change and a strikeout, Wilson singled to second base to score Troost from third.
After a 1-2-3 inning for both teams in the seventh, the Bulldogs added on two more runs to move their lead to 7-1. Zayatz cracked a RBI single up the middle, and Wilson poked his fifth hit of the game, which scored Zayatz.
The Bulldogs threatened to add to their lead in the ninth inning, but UNC Asheville left the bases loaded.
Aside from the five-hit game from Wilson, seven different Bulldogs all tallied a hit. Zayatz was the other Bulldog to earn a multi-hit game, as he cracked two hits. He also had two RBIs and two runs scored.
Pagano tallied a hit, as he touched home twice.
Gasparro also had a pair of RBIs off a lone hit, and Troost and Harris each scored once.
Brown was dominant in the start, as he went seven innings. He allowed just three hits and allowed only one run. He also didn't surrender a walk.
Eric Whitecavage and Jesse Juday slammed the door for Asheville, as the duo each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Whitecavage struck out two of the three batters he faced, while Juday forced three fly outs.
UNC Asheville advances to 13-36 overall and 8-17 in the Big South Conference. Charleston Southern falls to 17-33 on the year and 8-17 in league play.
