Bulldogs Drop 4-1 Decision at Charleston Southern

05.18.2018 | Baseball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Charleston Southern on Friday at CSU Ballpark, despite a two-hit game from Greg Gasparro.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

To kick off the game, Charleston Southern threatened to plate runs in the first inning, as two Buccaneers reached base safely. However, UNC Asheville starting pitcher, Gasparro, worked out of the jam unscathed.

After a scoreless second inning for both teams, CSU earned its first run of the game off a two-out, RBI single in the third inning. The base knock gave the Bucs the 1-0 lead.

UNC Asheville had a solid chance to plate runs in the top of the fourth, as it connected with two hits and a walk in the frame. Joe Gruszka connected with a one-out single, and he moved into scoring position with a stolen base. After a Danny Wilson walk, Gasparro forced the bases loaded with a single to right field. However, the next two Bulldogs struck out and grounded out to strand the trio.

The Buccaneers took advantage in the home half of the inning, as Josh Litchfield connected with a two-out solo home run. The lone run gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead.

After CSU plated another run in the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs scored their first run of the contest in the top of the sixth. Carmine Pagano started the rally with a single through the left side. After a fly out, Wilson earned a five-pitch walk to put two on base. The duo advanced 90 feet thanks to a wild pitch, and Gasparro scored Pagano from third on a sacrifice fly to make the game 3-1.

CSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, which gave the Buccaneers a three-run lead.

Asheville tried to plate runs in the final two innings, but the Bulldogs couldn't muster a hit, as they dropped game two of the series, 4-1.

Gasparro paced the Bulldog offense, as he was the lone Bulldog with a multi-hit performance. He finished the game with the lone RBI for Asheville.

Jake Madole was the only Bulldog to connect with an extra-base hit, as he smoked a pinch-hit double.

Gasparro started on the mound for the Bulldogs, and he went three innings, allowed three hits and struck out a pair.

Jesse Juday worked an inning, and he struck out one.

Jordan Fulbright finished the game, and he tossed four total innings. He scattered three hits, struck out four and didn't surrender a walk.

The Bulldogs fall to 13-37 overall and 8-18 in Big South Conference play, and CSU moves to 18-33 overall and 9-17 in league play.
