UNC Asheville Suffers 12-7 Setback to Conclude Regular Season

05.19.2018 | Baseball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Eight different Bulldogs collected at least one hit in the regular-season finale, but UNC Asheville baseball suffered a 12-7 setback to Charleston Southern on Saturday at CSU Ballpark.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

Neither team found a lot of momentum in the first two innings. In that stretch, both teams only recorded a hit.

In the third frame, the Bulldogs struck first, as Brandon Lankford started the inning with a leadoff single. Anthony Cuozzi followed with a sacrifice bunt, and after a fly out, Carmine Pagano connected with a single to score Lankford from second base. The RBI base knock gave Asheville the 1-0 lead.

Charleston Southern quickly retaliated in the bottom of the third with a five-hit inning, as it went up 5-1. Ryan Stoudemire had a big base hit for CSU, which was a three-RBI double.

The Bucs tacked on a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth to push its advantage to seven runs.

The Bulldogs tried to retaliate in the top of the fifth, as Lankford smacked a single up the middle. However, he was left stranded there.

After being held scoreless in the fifth, CSU plated a pair of runs to push its lead to 10-1.

The Bulldogs retaliated in the top of the seventh. After two quick outs, Pagano reached base via a fielding error, and Joe Gruszka capitalized with a two-out bomb. His fifth bomb of the season moved the game to 10-3.

In the home half of the seventh, the Bucs answered with a pair of two-out RBIs to move the lead to 12-3.

UNC Asheville posted a four-run inning in the eighth, which brought the deficit to 12-7. Tyler Serricchio earned a five-pitch walk with one out, and Jake Madole put two runners on base with a single. Lankford posted his third hit of the game, which was a single and forced the bases loaded. Chris Troost cracked a RBI single to right field to keep the momentum going. With the bases still loaded, all three Bulldogs moved up 90 feet thanks to a wild pitch. The errant throw scored Madole from third base. After a strikeout, Pagano walked to make the bases loaded. Again UNC Asheville took advantage of a miscue, as all three Bulldogs moved up a base thanks to a balk. Gruszka followed with another walk to make the bases loaded for the third time in the frame, and Danny Wilson made it hurt with a RBI base knock. After a CSU pitching change, Cody Smith limited the damage to four runs.

The Buccaneers threatened to pad their five-run lead, as they tried to work two-out magic. However, Jesse Juday worked around the two-hit inning to leave the pair of Bucs stranded.

UNC Asheville tried to keep the momentum rolling in the ninth inning, but the Bulldogs went down in order, which gave CSU the 12-7 victory.

Lankford led the Bulldog offense, as he tallied a three-hit game. He also touched home twice.

Seven other Bulldogs earned a hit in Saturday's series finale.

Gruszka poked the lone extra-base hit for UNC Asheville, which was a two-run homer in the seventh.

Pagano and Wilson each smacked a single, as they each totaled a RBI.

Serricchio and Madole also earned a hit, as the duo touched home once.

Austin Fahr and Juday were the only Bulldog pitchers to offer a scoreless outing. Fahr worked one inning, allowed one hit and didn't give up a walk. Juday allowed two hits in one inning of relief, where he also didn't surrender a walk.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season 13-38 overall and 8-19 in Big South Conference play, and CSU advances to 19-33 overall and 10-17 in league play.
