Three Bulldogs Set Single-Game Career Marks in Two-Run Victory Over Presbyterian

04.08.2018 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Three Bulldogs set new single-game career bests on Sunday afternoon, as the UNC Asheville baseball team bested Presbyterian, 7-5, in the series finale at Greenwood Field.

Danny Wilson highlighted the contest for the Bulldogs, as he posted four hits. The four-hit performance marked a single-game best for the junior. In his last three games, he has tallied nine hits. He plated three RBIs on Sunday, which was also a new career-best mark.

Also setting a single-game career mark was Tyler Serricchio. He connected with a three-hit game, which bested his previous record by one.

Rounding out the single-game highs was a three-RBI contest from Carmine Pagano.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

Both teams went scoreless in the first frame. PC cracked one hit in the opening inning, and UNC Asheville tallied a pair of base knocks from Danny Wilson and Joe Gruszka. However, neither team was able to capitalize.

The Blue Hose threatened to plate runs in the second inning, as Nick Wise was hit by a pitch and Thatcher Coleman connected with a single. Both players were left on base, as UNC Asheville starting pitcher Jordan Carr forced Jack McLaughlin to fly out to end the inning.

In the home half of the second, the Bulldog offense exploded for four runs. Serricchio and Chris Troost started the rally with back-to-back hits. Cody Wilson reached base via a fielder's choice, and Kole Harris forced the bases loaded on a PC throwing error. Danny Wilson capitalized with his second of the game, which plated both Serricchio and Cody Wilson. Joe Zayatz kept the momentum rolling with a RBI single to right center, and Pagano capped off the four-run inning with a RBI fielder's choice.

Presbyterian plated its first run of the contest off a Jonathan White RBI single. The Blue Hose threatened to score more runs in the stanza, but Carr worked out of the jam and stranded two base runners.

In the top of the fourth, the Blue Hose struck for another run, which brought the contest to 4-2.

After 1-2-3 innings for both teams in the fifth, Asheville struck for a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to extend its lead by four. Troost started the frame with a walk, and Cody Wilson followed with a single. Harris was then hit by a pitch to force the bases loaded. After a pitching change, Danny Wilson stroked the fourth pitch he saw, which plated Troost from third base. After a Zayatz hit by pitch, Pagano plated the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

The Blue Hose quickly answered, as they plated two runs of their own in the top of the seventh. A.J. Priaulx connected with a RBI single, and White scored on a failed pickoff attempt.

Up 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs tacked on one run to pull ahead by three. Greg Gasparro laid down a bunt single to reach base safely. Following a balk and a wild pitch, Pagano drove in his teammate with his first hit of the game.

In the final inning, the Blue Hose threatened to tie the game, but they were only able to muster a run, which gave the Bulldogs the 7-5 victory on Sunday.

Danny Wilson had a game-high four hits. Along with his four singles, he tallied a single-game career high by plating three RBIs.

Serricchio also joined his teammate, as he also set a new single-game career high by knocking three base hits. The sophomore also touched home once in the series finale.

Troost rounded out the multi-hit performances for Asheville, as the sophomore posted a two-hit game.

Pagano tallied a trio of RBIs, which matched Wilson for a game-high.

Gasparro, who came in to pinch run mid-way through the game, had a team-high two runs scored.

On the mound, Carr earned his third win on the year. He worked 6.2 frames, which is the second-longest outing of the season for the redshirt sophomore. He scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out four batters. Eric Whitecavage tossed 0.1 innings, where he allowed an unearned run. Jordan Fulbright closed the contest en route to earning his second career save. Fulbright tossed two innings, where he allowed two hits, one run and one strikeout.

After taking the series finale versus the Blue Hose, the Bulldogs move to 9-22 overall and 5-7 in the Big South Conference. Presbyterian falls to 12-22 overall and 6-6 in league play.
