Bulldogs Score Five Runs in Seventh Inning But Fall 12-7 in Series Opener Versus Presbyterian

04.06.2018 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite tallying a five-run seventh inning, the UNC Asheville baseball team dropped the series opener, 12-7, to Presbyterian on Friday at Greenwood Field.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

Presbyterian jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, as A.J. Priaulx connected with a two-run home run in the first inning.

In the top of the fourth, the Blue Hose tallied another run to go up 3-0. Tannor Byrd poked a RBI single down the left field line for his first hit of the game.

UNC Asheville retaliated in the home half of the fourth, as it earned its first run of the game. Cody Wilson connected with his second hit of the series opener to start the rally. Tyler Serricchio drew a walk, and Danny Wilson forced the bases loaded with a single through the left side. Chris Troost capitalized with a sacrifice fly with no outs, but that was all the Bulldogs could muster.

The Bulldogs made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth, as Danny Wilson smoked a single to left center. Cody Wilson was able to score easily to move the game to 3-2.

After a quick sixth inning for both teams, PC struck for four runs off three hits to advance its lead to 7-2. The first five Blue Hose reached base safely without recording an out. Priaulx and T.J. Richardson each earned a hit in the frame, as they combined for the three RBIs in the frame.

Just like in the fourth inning, the Bulldogs struck back, but this time, UNC Asheville tied the game at 7-all. Jake Madole started the rally with a single to left center. After advancing to second on a balk, Cody Wilson smacked a double down the left field line to score Madole. After advancing to third, Serricchio earned the RBI off a groundout. Danny Wilson and Kole Harris each dropped a single, and Joe Zayatz plated both Bulldogs to make it a one-run game. Carmine Pagano tied the game for the first time, as he roped a RBI single to right center to score Zaytaz without a throw.

The UNC Asheville lead quickly dissipated, as the Blue Hose again struck for four runs in the next inning. They struck for four hits, including a double from Andrew Bladt to pull ahead, 12-7.

PC tacked on an insurance run in the final inning, as Jonathan White tallied a RBI base knock.

The Bulldogs tried to start a rally in the ninth, as Harris smoked a single through the right side with one out. He moved to second on a throwing error by the catcher, and Pagano followed with a walk. However, both Bulldogs were left stranded to give PC the five-run victory.

Cody Wilson set a single-game career high, as he connected with a trio of hits. He poked a double and two singles en route to touching home a career-high three times and walking twice.

Danny Wilson matched a single-game career high, as he smacked three hits as well. All three of his hits were singles, as he extended his hit streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 15 straight games.

The one through three hitters for the Bulldogs - Harris, Zayatz and Pagano – each tallied a pair of hits, as they combined for three RBIs, two walks and two runs scored.

Harris extended his on-base streak to a team-leading 17 games, and Zayatz extended his on-base stretch to 11 consecutive games.

Serricchio earned a hit, as he went 1-for-3 with a RBI and two walks.

Eric Whitecavage and Blake Brown combined to toss a scoreless seventh inning, as they combined for one hit and one strikeout.

With the loss, UNC Asheville falls to 8-21 overall and 4-6 in Big South play, and Presbyterian moves to 11-21 and 5-5 in league play.
